Worth noting is that there was some discussion about whether it was Intentional Grounding - Nic was well within the pocket. For those of you who don't remember last year, we decided that Intentional Grounding should be treated like a sack because it only happens when the defense has bottled up the QB and likely would have gotten a sack at that spot. Biscuits stated that with the flea-flicker, grounding is allowed. HOWEVER, I CAN FIND NOTHING IN THE NFL RULES (YES, I OWN THEM) THAT SAYS THAT GROUNDING IS PERMITED IN THIS SITUATION. Nick's 41.86% completion rate is pretty good in a 10 player game. 3 TDs isn't bad either.

Kuzi was the only player with more than 50 yards with 67 yards and a TD. The next best was Louis with 37 and a TD and then Barry, Chenault, and and Street with 30 each (Barry getting his on one play that was also for a TD). This is what happens when we get 23 players.

Couple of very nice defensive games, however. Adam had 3 defensed passes and 6 flags (only 1 or 2 as a corner). Jessie had 2 flags, 2 defensed passes, and a pick. Hippie had 6 flags, 2 sacks, a defensed pass, and a pick. Hill had 2 sacks too. Leo had a defensed pass and pick to go with a couple flags. On Yellow, Chenault had the biggest day with 3 sacks (one for a safety), a heads up pick for a TD, and an extra flag in the mix. However Street's 2 flags, 2 defensed passes and 2 picks and Kuzi's defensed pass and 2 picks were also very good. Can't forget Chris with 2 defensed passes (one which turned into Chenault's pick/TD) and a sack and Louis had a defensed pass and a pick as well and then Barry made a nice play for the safety after a pick by Leo.

MVP: Tough this week. Chenault had a huge game on defense and a decent game on offense. Kuzi had the bigger game on offense and still a very big game on defense. They are the two main candidates. They both had 2 rushes for about 10 yards (10 for Chenault, 11 for Kuzi). They were both passed to 4 times and had 2 receptions and though Kuzi had more yards and a TD - Chenault is slow so what do you expect? Besides he did get the defensive TD to offset Kuzi's TD advantage on offense. On defense, Kuzi had 3 impact plays and Chenault had 4 so the extra impact play by Chenault on defense makes up for the lower yards on offense.

This is as close to a perfect tie as I can imagine and thus we have a tie between Kuzi and Chenault for this week's MVP award.

Week 4 Game Summary (played 10/6/07)
My thanks to Biscuits, Casey, Chenault, Cluin, Day, Hill, Jimmy, Mark, Nick, Ortega, and Treadway for their timely arrivals.

Little thing about game times, this year we've had great timeliness. While not everyone is there and ready to play by 9:00 each week, we still get enough there that the first huddle has started at 9:10 every week. This is night and day compared to last year where a 9:20 start time was "good."

Having said that, when it's 90+ degrees for most of the game, it would be nice to stop the game at some time close to noon - 12:35 being rather a bit long it that heat. Nevertheless, it was a really good game. I think everyone who was there will attest to that - particularly when the score was 3-0 at one point and then the final score ended up at 5-4 and not due to luck or crappy play by defenses.

400 yards passing? That may one of the biggest passing days we've had since we started tracking stats. The completion percentages we're pretty good though not great (50% completion rate is the threshold for "great" in our game).

We start off with several nice performances: Day with 58 yards. Canadian with 64 yards and a TD, and Ethan with 80 yards. Then we move to two outstanding performances: Biscuits with 117 yards and a TD and Jimmy with 181 yards and 3 TDs. Jimmy also had the most catches (8) and 3 rushes.

Quite a few nice defensive games this week. Biscuits had 3 defensed passes including 2 during the last possession that prevented Red from tying it up. These plays (along with a defensed pass by Treadaway) preserved the victory for Yellow. Speaking of Treadaway, he had 3 flags, 2 defensed passes, and a pick. Mark had 7 flags and sacks as usual: 2 for 17 yards in losses. A nice performance by Cluin with 3 flags, a defensed pass and 2 sacks. But Yellow's best defensive performance was probably Canadian's with 9 flags, 2 defensed passes, 3 PICKS with one returned for a TD.

Red had a couple nice defensive performances with Hill getting 6 flags and 2 defensed passes. Nick got a couple flags, a defensed pass, a pick (on a great effort), and a sack. Adam had 13 flags which is pretty good considering he played safety or linebacker for most of the game and didn't get many of those flags in direct coverage.

MVP: I have been debating the MVP award this week for the last two days. Some weeks its tough to pick an MVP because there weren't any super-standout performances. This week, however, there are three performances that could win any week. The biggest problem is that they all happened this one week.

The nominees are:

1) Biscuits who had a breakout performance on both offense and defense.;
2) Canadian who continued the excellent play he started the season with two weeks ago (though he didn't continue his timeliness); and
3) Jimmy who simply had an amazing offensive performance.

Now, here are a couple things to remember. MVP is supposed to be the single best performance of the week. Preferably it would involve strong games on defense and offense (Biscuits and and Canadian both had strong games in that regard). Usually, the MVP goes to a player on the winning team, as well.

However, you have to remember the origins of the MVP award in our game. Several years ago, a guy named Alex came out and had a game for the ages. I wasn't keeping stats like I am now but he had something like 3 picks and 5 sacks (or 5 picks and 3 sacks - I can't remember which) some of the picks were returned for TDs and he had big offensive yards and TDs too. Basically, Alex simply took over the game and was unstoppable.

When I look at the stats from this week's game, there was one player who's performance rose to something close to that level. 181 yards and 3 TDs is amazing. While Ethan's arrival helped Red settled down, Jimmy's play is what brought Red into a tie and turned a blowout into a very tight game.

Without Jimmy's play, Red would likely have been blown out. This is not to take anything away from Biscuits or Canadian who I applaud for their terrific games.

Week 3 Game Summary - 9/29/07

A few people have approached me about adding people to the evite and I'd like to hold off doing that for a few weeks. I tried to prune the Evite down to our most regular players and those who new late last year because the Evite was up to 100. Early in the year we usually have pretty large games because everyone is excited about playing again and no one is hurt and there are fewer family obligations (holidays). While our 10 on 10 game a few weeks ago wasn't bad as far as large games go, I think games with 14-18 players are generally more enjoyable for everyone.

So I'd like to hold the line on players for a few weeks to see how things stablize. This last week I added Andy from my "pool" of potential players because we were at like 10 on Thursday which is rediculously low for this early in the year. I'm glad he came out and think he'll be a good addition. As always, everyone who's played with us in the past is welcome to keep playing.

On to the game. We started at 9:10 again. That's three weeks in a row and a hell of a great start. The game opens with 7 on 7 - so 3 linemen and 3 eligibles.

Leo had a very nice game with 51% completion rate, 3 TDs, and nearly 300 yards (remember that's on an 80 yard field and a short game). His completion percentage would have been 58% without three drops and yardage would have definitely been above 300. Its hard to compare Street and Cain to Leo because they split the series at QB but if you combine their stats, Red had a decent game with nearly 50% completions (1 drop), 223 yards and 2 TDs.

Biggest performance here was Josh's - 4 catches for 109 yards and 2 TDs on 4 Targets and some big gains after contact - Perfection. Cain's 62 combined yards were also nice particularly the way he gained them. For Yellow there were a number of nice performances. Leading them off was Louis who was got 79 yards and a TD on 7 receptions on 8 targets with 1 run. Louis was clearly the goto receiver who got it done. David also put up 79 yards and a TD with 4 receptions on 7 targets.

Street had the most flags with 9. He also had a defensed pass, a pick, and a sack. Diego's debut included 2 defensed passes. Jesse lead Yellow with 6 flags and he had a defensed pass. Louis's defensed pass and 4 flags were also good. But the defensive player of the day was Kuzi with a defensed pass and 2 picks along with 3 flags.

MVP:
This one is really tough. They often are. Had Red won or tied, I would have been tempted to give it to Josh - particularly had he been on time. He had a terrific game on offense. I believe the MVP can be from the losing team if he's so dominant that the other team has no answer and if there are no standout performances on the winning team.

However, this week, we had 3 standout performances on the winning team. Kuzi's 48 yards on offense were good but his defense was terrific. Louis had a great game on offense and pretty nice decent game. But then there is Leo. Leo's defensive game was a little light with one sack but his game as QB was huge especially considering how many times he was making plays under strong pressure. Also worth mentioning the 28 yards rushing he had on the hook-n-ladder and he was ON TIME which trust me, is not typically one of Leo's strengths : )
