Week 33 Game Summary:

Funny how the weather starts ugly and yet we start playing 10 minutes earlier than we have in all of 2009. Not only that but the weather turned out to be GREAT. It stopped raining just before we started playing and the sun was coming out an hour later. If you stayed home due to weather, you missed a good one for no reason.

Very nice passing games today. The soft field definitely hurt the pass rush and the QBs were able to advantage throwing for nearly 800 yards and completing nearly 45% of all passes thrown. Nick led with a 49.09% completion rate but Canadian came off the bench and had a big game completing 44.44% of his passes for over 400 yards and 7 TDs. If you take away the pick that Adam caused, Canadian would have had a passer rating over 107.

3 receivers with over 100 yards with BB, Treadaway and Paul all going into triple digits but Paul was clearly the leader with 8 catches for 241 yards and 4 TDs. BB was next with 123 yards and Treadaway had 104 yards and 2 TDs. Pretty much everyone got in the action today. Some of the other noteworthy games were turned in by Adam with 94 yards and a TD, Matta with 79 yards and 2 TDs, and Zieser with 47 yards on 2 catches but both for TDs. Also, did anyone notice all the RUNNING PLAYS BY NON-QBs? Been a long time since we've seen that.

The field conditions certainly hurt the defense. There were only 5 sacks in the game with Rob and Gary each getting 2 and Matta getting one. Other QB pressures were relatively light as well with Nick and Chenault each having 2. Hillis, BB, and Charles each had 2 defensed passes and a pick. Adam had 4 defensed passes.

Awards:
MVP - When you have three players each with over 100 yards and the top player more than doubled the next two, that shows you something. Did I mention that he touched the ball 8 times and had 4 TDs and 3 first downs?

Offensive Player of the Game - Canadian hasn't played nearly as much QB this year as he has in years past. I think this is only the 2nd or 3rd game all year he's thrown but he had a terrific game at QB as I noted above.

Defensive Player of the Game - This was harder this week because we had 3 players with similar stats (2 defensed passes and 1 pick). I'm giving the award to Charles this week because he had the best pick and more flags.

What's funny is that before the game, Street told me that he was tired of "these 13 or 14 completion games, I want to get back in the 20s" - well he did that this week and averaged 20 yards per completion - it's unfortunate that the picks had to mar his performance, particularly when most of them were not his fault or even spectactular play by the Red defense.

3 100+ yard receivers this week. Simmons led them all with 141 combined yards. He was followed by Treadaway with 118 on 4 catches (2 for TDs and 2 for 1st downs). Paul was our other triple digit threat this week with 115 yards on three catches that included 2 TDs and a 1st down. Canadian may not have cracked 100 yards this week but he did get 7 catches for 83 yards, 2 TDs, and a 1st down.

A number of players had strong defensive plays. Canadian had 2 picks and 2 defensed passes. Treadaway had a defensed pass, 2 picks and was in on a QB pressure. Cain defensed a couple passes. Leo had a defensed pass, a sack, and was in on a couple pressures. Matta also had a defensed pass and QB pressure. Over on Yellow, Simmons led with 4 sacks and 2 QB pressures. I wouldn't say this if one of the Red players hadn't said this to me after the game: "sometimes it's better to be lucky than good." Now, I'm not saying that Red played a bad game because they didn't at all and they made some terrific plays. However, normally the team that applies more pressure to the opposing QB and protects their own QB wins the game - that's one of the things I like about our game because that's what happens in pro games. However this week, despite Cain being being on the run constantly and throwing under tons of pressure and Street having better protection, Red won the game.

Regardless of whether there was some luck involved, Yellow made some mistakes that Red capitalized on and that's why games are decided by score and not stats. I'm not happy to have lost but I am happy to have played and I hope everyone else enjoyed the game as much as I did.

Big game, small stats. No 100 yard players this week but that's not too surprising. It is a little more surprising that only one, Canadian, had over 50 yards.. Canadian and Leo were our "reception leaders" with 4 each.

Adam was sack leader with 4 sacks and a stop for a loss along with a number QB pressures. Mask and Bouchard each had sacks on the day and one of Mark's was a Safety - he also picked a pass. Lots of pressure was applied by both defensive lines today with a total of 14 QB pressures to go with the 7 sacks (plus some defensed passes on the rush). THere were a total of 8 defensed passes in the game.

MVP - Nick - Normally I try to find a player on the winning team who had a big game on both offense and defense. That didn't really happen this week. So then I looked at who made the biggest difference in the game for the winning team and I think this week Nick fits that bill nicely. He took care of the ball, used his legs when he needed to, made some nice throws and never let Yellow's defense get him flustered.

Offensive Player of the Game - Canadian - 58% more yards than anyone else this week and he accounted for more than 50% of Red's receiving yardage.

Defensive Player of the Game - Mark - It was originally Adam because while Mark's safety plus pick performance was very nice, the pick was caused by another player and there was a second Red defender standing next to him at the catch so in all likelihood the pick was going to be made no matter what - no offense. However, it turns out that Mark had a 3rd sack so it was not a 2 sack (1 safety) with a pick performance. That 3rd sack tied Adam for fantasy points and since once of Mark's defensive plays resulted in points (safety) and the pick set up a TD, I'll break the tie by giving it to Mark this week.
