Week 33 Game Summary (belated - game played on 5/19/07)

Odd week. We only had 9 show up in any semblance of timely and so we started a game 4 on 4 with a one man line. Then after we got another player, we changed it to 5 on 5 and started a second game. All stats at the end will be stats for the day (both games).

Outstanding Performances:
This week included some very nice performances. Lets start with 3 QBs with completion percentages of 60% or better. The lowest performing QB had 50% completion rating, a 168 yards and a TD (Chenault). Even if you think the first play (65 yard TD was a fluke) the other 103 yards on 7 other completions is pretty nice. Chenault also had 44 combined rushing /receiving yards, 4 flags, a pick, and a safety. Very nice. Casey had a very strong performance at QB with 60.61% completions for 231 yards, and 5 TDs. If it wasn't for his 3 interceptions he would have been a very strong candidate for MVP of the day. He also had 74 combined rushing receiving yards as well.

However the passing performance of the day was clearly Leo's: 61.29% completions (even with 2.5 drops), 312 yards, no picks, and 7 TDs! Very possibly his best day ever. Toss in another 115 combined rushing/receiving yards, 2 TDs as an eligible receiver, and a defensed pass and a sack and you can understand why I'm giving him MVP honors for the day.

Many other players were solid performances and were in the running for MVP. Josh had a MONSTER game as a receiver with 189 combined yards and 4 TDs. David had 69 yards but was really strong defensively with 7 flags, 3 defensed passes and 2 sacks. Ethan had 90 yards and a TD along with three flags. Adam had a strong day offensively and defensively (despite the drops) 83 yards and 2 TDs on offense and 10 flags, a defensed pass and 2 picks on defense. Finally Matt caught 7 on 8 targets for 72 yards and 2 TDs. He also had 5 flags and a defensed pass.

Outstanding Performances:
Cain with 52.08% completion percentage for 465 yards and 8 passing TDs. It helps to play QB for both teams for part of the day but still, those are some nice numbers. Cain also had a pick, a defensed pass, and 2 sacks. Adam started slow on offense but ended up with big numbers: 120 combined yards and 2 TDs to go with a rock solid defensive effort: 6 flags and 4 defensed passes from the safety spot. These numbers would normally make Adam a contender for the MVP but all those yards came on 4 plays including a 60+ yard Hook and Ladder and one 42 yard pass and they came after the game was well out of reach. Our MVP this week is Jimmy who had 159 yards and 2 TDs on a game leading 7 receptions along with a terrific 10 yard sack on defense - one guy beating two linemen.

Other nice performances included Chris with 106 combined yards and 2 TDs; Mark with 94 combined yards, a TD, and a Sack; Paul with 92 combined yards, 2 TDs, 5 flags, and a pick. Special mention for Rich and his first interception (which included a very nice run back).

13th Season Epilogue

Those of you who have been visited the site over the summer have probably noted that the last three games from the 13th season weren't transcribed. There were several reasons for that.

• First, I was in a cast at the end of the year due to a thumb ligament tear and it was hard to type.
  
• Second, my wife and I spent most of the summer remodeling parts of our house and on related projects.
  
• Transcribing a game takes about as much time as the game took to play because I have to listen to the whole damn recording.

Having said that, I am committed to finishing out those transcriptions and as you can see in the next post, I've already finished one of them.

For the new season, I've enhanced my transcription tools to speed the process up and will be using a better recorder that allows me to record each play separately so I won't have to listen to the whole game. Hopefully that will reduce the process from 3+ hours to 75 minutes and allow me to do it during commercials of NFL games and such.

A New Season - Number 14 for yours truly

I love the enthusiasm for our game. I've been hearing from players looking for the start of the new season for a couple weeks so. So we're going to kick off a bit early with a preseason game. Here's the schedule:

Saturday 9/15/07: "Preaseason Game" - 9:00 AM at McNeil. We'll play for about 2 hours and use our scrimmage rules (what we used to use in our old "practice drives" for those of you who played 2+ years ago) since endurance will likely be low.

Saturday 9/22/07: first "Real Game" - 9:00 AM at McNeil. This will be a normal game - 3 hours and standard rules.

I'm looking forward to a great season with old and new friends, few injuries to any players and maybe, hopefully timely starts. Given the high level of interest in this game and getting started again, I would hope that of the enthusiasm would be demonstrated in arrival times. The intent is to have games start at 9:00 so we can get a good three hours in and then meet other obligations to work or family. 9:00 start requires guys to get to the field by 8:45 to put on cleats, stretch, and warm-up. Last year we were lucky to begin games at 9:30 because so many people showed up.

Some of our regulars will be at ACL Fest and miss the Preseason Game, the rest we'll hopefully see at McNeil.

Week 31 Game Summary - Much better than last week when I had to beg players to show up, although it was a bit disappointing that we didn't get all of our RSVPers out. We did find some new players this week. In a way, it kind of reminds me of how I met Brian years ago. This game started about 13 years ago by me and some friends of mine (none of who play any more) and in the beginning, it was a small game. 4 on 4 was a good game. 5 on 5 was great. Then one day after a game, Brian showed up with some friends of his to play their own game. So my friend Marc and I stuck around to play with them. The next week, we combined games. and the game has been going strong ever since. Every year we lose a few players but the key is that we also find new ones.

This week, several guys showed up around 11:00 after playing in a flag league game. They fit right in and hopefully will continue to come out.

Outstanding Performances - Lets start with Tom with a 44.12% completion percentage, 221 yards and 2 TDs. Add another 62 yards and 2 TDs as a WR and 7 flags and defensed pass on defense and you have an outstanding performance. Mark had 94 combined yards and a TD as well as 2 flags with one being a sack. Mike's 61 yards, 4 flags and a pass defensed were also noteworthy.

Paul had 92 combined yards and 2 TDs as well as 5 sacks and a pick. Jimmy's 159 combined yards were the game high. He also had more receptions than anyone at 6 and got 2 TDs. His defensive effort included 2 flags (one a sack) and a defensed pass. Chris' 71 combined yards, 2 TDs and defensed pass were also rather nice. Adam put tried to make a case for MVP with 120 combined yards, 2 TDs and 6 flags and 5 defensed passes (5 is a record - the safety spot is definitely agreeing with him) - however neither his play nor Jimmy's were sufficient to win the award this week (though they would have been shoe-ins in other weeks).

This week's MVP can only go to one player - Cain. Cain had a 47.83% completion percentage and 448 yards and 8 TDs between both teams. Cain also had 3 flags (2 of which were sacks), a pick, and a defensed pass. Very, very nice. While it helped to play all time QB for 3 series, if you back out his numbers on Yellow, he still had 6 TDs, 318 yards, and a 47.22% completion rate for Red.
