Week 3 Game Summary - 9/29/07

My thanks to Chenault, David, Kuzi, Leo, Mike, Street, Travis, Cain, and Andy for timely
arrivals and welcome to Andy and Diego for joining the game.

A few people have approached me about adding people to the evite and I'd like to hold off doing that for a few weeks. I tried to prune the Evite down to our most regular players and those who new late last year because the Evite was up to 100. Early in the year we usually have pretty large games because everyone is excited about playing again and no one is hurt and there are fewer family obligations (holidays). While our 10 on 10 game a few weeks ago wasn't bad as far as large games go, I think games with 14-18 players are generally more enjoyable for everyone.

So I'd like to hold the line on players for a few weeks to see how things stablize. This last week I added Andy from my "pool" of potential players because we were at like 10 on Thursday which is rediculously low for this early in the year. I'm glad he came out and think he'll be a good addition. As always, everyone who's played with us in the past is welcome to keep playing.

On to the game. We started at 9:10 again. That's three weeks in a row and a hell of a great start. The game opens with 7 on 7 - so 3 linemen and 3 eligibles.

Leo had a very nice game with 51% completion rate, 3 TDs, and nearly 300 yards (remember that's on an 80 yard field and a short game). His completion percentage would have been 58% without three drops and yardage would have definitely been above 300. Its hard to compare Street and Cain to Leo because they split the series at QB but if you combine their stats, Red had a decent game with nearly 50% completions (1 drop), 223 yards and 2 TDs.

Biggest performance here was Josh's - 4 catches for 109 yards and 2 TDs on 4 Targets and some big gains after contact - Perfection. Cain's 62 combined yards were also nice particularly the way he gained them. For Yellow there were a number of nice performances. Leading them off was Louis who was got 79 yards and a TD on 7 receptions on 8 targets with 1 run. Louis was clearly the goto receiver who got it done. David also put up 79 yards and a TD with 4 receptions on 7 targets.

Street had the most flags with 9. He also had a defensed pass, a pick, and a sack. Diego's debut included 2 defensed passes. Jesse lead Yellow with 6 flags and he had a defensed pass. Louis's defensed pass and 4 flags were also good. But the defensive player of the day was Kuzi with a defensed pass and 2 picks along with 3 flags.

MVP:
This one is really tough. They often are. Had Red won or tied, I would have been tempted to give it to Josh - particularly had he been on time. He had a terrific game on offense. I believe the MVP can be from the losing team if he's so dominant that the other team has no answer and if there are no standout performances on the winning team.

However, this week, we had 3 standout performances on the winning team. Kuzi's 48 yards on offense were good but his defense was terrific. Louis had a great game on offense and pretty nice decent game. But then there is Leo. Leo's defensive game was a little light with one sack but his game as QB was huge especially considering how many times he was making plays under strong pressure. Also worth mentioning the 28 yards rushing he had on the hook-n-ladder and he was ON TIME which trust me, is not typically one of Leo's strengths : )

9/22/07 Game Summary:

10 on 10 games are generally not great games, especially on the small field but this one was really good. Not as much offense most people would like but some really great defensive efforts.

Timely players include: Adam, Chi, Canadian, Josh, Kuzi, Nick, Hippie, Chenault, David, Louis, Mark, Biscuits, and Jimmy. About 2/3rds not bad. The rest were there in time for another 9:10 start so its hard to complain much about that. Thanks to everyone who was on time and everyone else still showing up pretty quickly. This is a good start this season.

Some controversy on this play because after the ball was thrown, Chenault hit Nick pretty hard and called himself for "roughing the passer." After discussion it was decided that generally the pick was not the result of the hit and that we don't normally call contact penalties (unless the offender is a repeater). Its a rough game and we don't want people to be hit like that but ultimately accidents will happen and we need to just talk the play through and reach a reasonable conclusion. In this case, while I didn't see the hit, I did see the throw and the coverage - Louis had Ray very well covered. There was a chance Ray would get it and chance Louis would and a bigger chance for an incompletion.

Well Chenault had the best completion percentage but remember, he had 4 passes and 1 pick. 172 yards for Nick in a big defensive game was pretty darn good and his long throw to Hippie was simply beautiful.

In a game with very little offense, one player clearly stood out. Canadian had 66 yards on 4 catches from 5 targets. Hippie had 57 yards on 2 catches and Nick was the games leading rusher! 77 yards on 7 rushes and a rushing TD. Jimmy also was impressive with his runs and reception.

Once again we have a terrific performance by the Canadian with 8 flags, 2 defensed passes and a sack. Josh also had a big game with 3 flags and 2 defensed passes (all the more impressive considering he was playing line). Louis though had 4 flags, a defensed pass, and 2 Picks - arguably the defensive effort of the day but then there was Ray who had 2 flags, a defensed pass, and a safety. Hippie had 5 flags and a defensed pass. David had 4 flags, a defensed pass, and a pick. Very, very nice defensive efforts in this game.

MVP:
The best individual award goes to Canadian with both a strong offensive and defensive effort and many of his plays occuring at critical times but in this game we have the rare "Whole Defense" MVP. Twice Yellow had first and goal from the 9 - back to back in fact and twice Red was able to keep Yellow out of the endzone. Considering Red won the game 1.5 to 0, those two stands were huge.

Season 14 Kick Off - UPDATED WITH CORRECTIONS

Okay last week was supposed to be a preseason game - short game, scrimmage rules, etc. But, not surprisingly, a real game broke out at the first snap and we just played on from there.

Couple new things to talk about. Chenault and I were talking about the need to improve running in the game and he suggested that we try 20 yard first downs rather than 25 as we've been using for the past 8 years or so. We did and runs generally were more valuable. A good run in our game has typically been about 6 yards. If you get that in a 25 yard zone, its less than 1/4th the distance you need. If you do it in a 20 yard zone, its nearly 1/3rd the distance - definitely makes running more attractive.

So here are some new Season 14 rules as they currently stand (we may need a tweak here or there):

1) Game has four 20 yard first down zones which increases the field length from 75 yards to 80 yards.

2) The ball starts on the 8 at the start of the game, after a touchdown, or after a safety (we started at the 10 on a 25 yard first down which is 40% of the zone length and 8 yards is 40% of a 20 yard zone length).

3) Punts will increase to 40 yards + or - 5. We didn't do this during week 1. We used 35 yards like before but my feeling is that since 35 yards was just under half of the old field, then we should use 40 yards now on a longer field.

Other changes:

1) Because begging has not improved timeliness, I'm hoping that public shamings will. At 9:00, I'm going to record the name of everyone who is there and ready to play. If we have 12 players, we start play. So show up at 8:45, put your gear on, stretch, and be ready at 9:00 - I get up before 7 so I can get the gear, ice, water, etc. to the field before 8:30, get the field set up, stretch, and get into gear to be ready to play. Last year there were about 6-8 people who regularly were there and ready to play by 9:00.

2) I'm using a second recorder to try to improve game stats. Last year it took me 3 hours or more to transcribe a game and I need to cut that down to less than 90 minutes. It may take me a little longer during the game to transcribe a play (have to activate the recorder after every play) but it will save a lot of time and I know that most of you enjoy the transcriptions and stats as much as I do so I want to continue doing it.

3) I'm working on a way to record all the stats for the season into a DB so I can record end of season stats - wins, losses, yards, etc. and we'll pick "pro bowl" players or the like at the end of the season. To do this, I'm assigning players unique names when their names are relatively common (i.e. when we have multiple people coming out with the same name). So Matt Day is Day, Jason Chenault is Chenault, Jason Brecht is Brecht, Tom Street is Street, etc.

Nick had a very nice day with a 54.17% completion rate for 164 yards and 2 TDs. Cain didn't get any help from his receivers with 3 drops and a couple other incompletions that could were close to drops. Some of these would have been big plays.

Best performances here were Jesse with 77 combined yards and a TD on 6 receptions (8 targets) and one run. Day was also a high performer with a game leading 79 yards on 4 catches (6 targets).

Chi and David both had big days for Red with 5 flags and 2 defensed passes each and Chi also had a nice sack. Ty's 6 flags led all defenders today. He had 2 defensed passes too. Over on Yellow, the defenders didn't have as much of a chance to shine since Red couldn't get its offense going. Jesse had a couple big plays with a flag, an interception, and a defensed pass. Street's 3 flags, 2 defensed passes, 2 picks and a defensive touchdown was the best defensive performance of the day though I didn't get the name of the person who got a 4 yard sack on Cain.

Week 1 MVP - Originally, I thought I had a hard time selecting the MVP because based on the original stats, any really super standout performances. Just several solid week 1 games. Nick had a very nice performance (especially considering he didn't come out for any practice in the prior two weeks) but he didn't do anything stat-wise on defense. That may not be fair but its not like I have real game tape and can show the number of times Cain didn't pass to his receiver or how many times he tied up two linemen to allow another guy to get a sack. Nick had a very, very good game.

Jesse on the other hand, had a strong game offensively and defensively. He had the best game as a runner/receiver and arguably the second best as a defender for his team. But he was not on time.

Now here's where things change based on the updated stats. While Street did not have the most yards or catches (24 combined yards on 2 catches and one run), he was only thrown to 3 times and the one pass he did not catch was defensed by Chi which is generally more of a statement about the pass than the receiver. Then on defense, he had 3 flags, 2 defensed passes, 2 interceptions AND one of those returned for a TD. Street was the only player with TDs. AND . . . (wait for it) . . . he was on time.

From now on, if a player is late (particularly if he's very late), he can still win the MVP but it will be points off and so he'll have to kick ass all the more. A close race could be decided by timeliness so keep that in mind if you don't want to be at a disadvantage, get there on time.

So while I originally had Jesse down as MVP, I have reversed my opinion and award it to Street - that extra pick and TD were a big deal. My apologies that my recording problems delayed the awarding of this honor.
