Too Much Contact

Week 27 finally went too far. Although no one got injured, a least two players felt a lot of pain on plays that didn't need to happen. Even before those plays (which were relatively late in the game) there were plenty of plays that basically involved tackling a player even if it was relatively softly.

In the post game discussion, I initially defended a couple of these soft tackle plays because the players were not really moving at any kind of speed at the time and they were similar to what we've seen this year - in retrospect, I was really wrong. I love that our game has contact but there are limits to the level of that contact.

Even if people think that the light tackling should be allowed because people don't get hurt, I'm going to disagree. I'm not saying that people won't hit the ground in accidents or because of legitimate plays. However, I think that there's a good chance that those plays that were over the line happened because we've allowed light tackling to become more acceptable. When players think they can take a guy to the ground lightly, they are already approaching the ball carrier with a different mindset - it makes it much easier to accidentally step over the line with regard to the level of contact, particularly if you have experience playing in pads and instincts take over.

To be clear, I'm not talking just about last week or even the players who were there. There are players who were not at the game that tackle too often and I think that most players (including myself) have made a play that they regretted where they did something in the heat of the game. So while it would be easy to argue specific plays or players, that's not the purpose of this missive and I hope that people don't decide that's what's needed. What I wanted to do here was to get back to a level of contact that is still fun but safer.

After the game last week, I had some email or phone calls with exchanges with some of the players who I know best outside the game and while I don't know that they would agree with everything that I'm writing, I have taken their input into account and tried to draw up some reasonable standards.

There are basically two items:

1) Tackling is not permitted - That's not to say that sometimes people won't hit the ground. If two guys go up for a ball, there's a good chance they will come down in a heap. We have also always allowed a defender to wrap up a defender to get a flag or wait for help to get the flag. Notice the operative part of that - "to get a flag or wait for help to get the flag"? You're not wrapping up and taking down and wrapping up should happen downfield where the defender is in front of the ball carrier and therefore able to wrap up cleanly. It's not chasing the guy down from behind and diving around their waist. Diving for a flag is fine. Diving and wrapping up is likely going to result in a tackle.

Now, if the ball carrier continues to struggle after being wrapped up, it is possible that people will go down but it is unlikely to be a serious issue because at that point, neither ball carrier nor defender likely has much momentum - plus, there is an element of choice involved. The defender chose to wrap up and the offensive player chose to struggle. If the offensive player objects, he doesn't have to struggle (or could try to pitch the ball away). If the defensive player objects - he doesn't have to wrap up and can instead try to get the flag without contact.

2) No "hitting" - There are two distinct areas of the field to discuss - down field and at the line/backfield.

2a) Downfield blocking or contact needs to only be with hands. That allows for stiff-arms (which have always been legal in the game) but does not allow a blocker to lead with a shoulder and it doesn't allow the ball carrier to just run over someone or lead with their shoulder. I think Barry and Treadaway can provide examples of what can go wrong when you don't follow this rule.

2b) At the line, offensive lineman can have contact with their shoulder but that should be happening during the grapple and not "at speed" or distance. Think about if Jesse were blocking Mark - as Mark is starting to overpower Jesse's hand block, you could see Jesse reasonably rolling with Mark and trying to brace or force him outside. That's different than finding a rusher coming free and then stepping in front of him with a shoulder - that's a hit and is not permitted.
This idea can probably be developed further but the basic idea is sound. One last thing I should mention is that a defender hitting the QB's arm with his hand or arm on the throw is a lot different than hitting him in the ribs or legs.

I'd like to think these are relatively common sense ideas that people will support and welcome efforts to better define them and keep the game from becoming "Full Contact Football with Flags" which it was slowly moving towards and instead keep it as "Contact Flag."

Street 15 1 44 34.09% 342 4 2 5 -40 74.24

Street showed some signs of rust with a completion percentage of only 34.09% and taking 5 sacks but he obviously made some beautiful long throws both with and against a 20 MPH wind. Cain came in late but had his best QB performance in a while with a 113.33 rating.

Receiving/Rushing Stats:
Players Recpts Targets Yards Rec TDs Rushes Yards Rush TDs Combined Blocks 1st Downs

Treadaway 1 6 8 0 0 0 0 8 0 0

Canadian and Kyle had almost identical stats with 4 catches for about 130 yards and a TD. BB and Mark also had remarkably similar days with 2 catches each for 90/84 yards and a TD each (and both scored on the same 5 yard out-n-up route).

Defensive Stats:
Players Flags Passes Defensed INTs Strips Sacks/ Stops for Loss Pressures Safeties Def TDs
Adam 0.5 2 1 0 0 1 0 1
BB 5.5 2 0 0 0 0 0 0

Nick 7 0 0 0 4 0 0 0
Treadaway 2 0 0 0 0 0 0 0

Adam led with 2 defensed passes, a pressure and a pick 6. Nick was the sack leader this week with 4. Mark had 3 sacks and a pressure as well. Also harrassing QBs to good effect this week were Biscuits who returned after months of exhile for a sack and 2.5 pressures and Josh and Carlos who each had half a sack and 2 pressures - Carlos also defensed a pass. Street had 2 picks and Canadian, Day, and Kyle each had one.

Special Teams Stats:
Players Punts Punt Yards Punts Fielded
Mark 1 48 0
Street 0 0 2
Nick 3 113 0

Mark's one punt was a boomer at 48 yards and Nick averaged nearly 38 yards which is impressive given that 2 of them were against the wind (one would have gone another 20 yards had it not suddenly nose-dived because of the gusts).

Awards:

MVP goes to Street with big plays on offense and defense.

Offensive Player of the week goes to Cain who made nice plays as a receiver, QB, and runner.

Defensive Player of the week goes to Adam though it was close given some of the stats other players put up.

3 Things:

There are 12 weeks left in the season. We play through the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend (unless lack of attendance or crazy heat force an earlier conclusion) which is May 23 this year. So remember, summer time is for healing and you've only got 12 more weeks to play. Man-up and get out there.

With that in mind, I like to encourage people to get there a few minutes earlier. For most of the year, we've had pretty timely starts but for a while now, it's started to get later (I'm not including 2 weeks ago when we had 10 guys out pretty early but no one wanted to start until we were sure we wouldn't get 2 more since a 2 person line game is better than a game without a line). March might be nice weather but it will start getting hot fast so early starts make for more comfortable games.

On the subject of resolving conflicts, I'd like to point out that the last two weeks have not had any arguments. Read through the Week 26 stats and you'll find two plays that were disputed and how they were resolved. I'm not saying everyone was happy with the results - I'm sure Anthony would have liked the TD on his play and Canadian and Adam would have liked credit for a beautifully executed Cuba-Libre - but they were fairly resolved and I don't think anybody walked away from the game (or even the plays in question) really upset. Kudos to the effort people are making to get a reasonable resolution, quickly and with no raised voices.
Week 26 Game Summary:

R - Anthony, Cain, Chenault, Day, Jesse, RChin, & Treadaway
Y - Adam, Canadian, Carlos, Jeff, Nick, Paul, & Rick

Game was 7 on 7 for most of it until it dropped to 6 on 6 due to injury at 11:00.

Because the wind was such a factor in this game (routinely blowing towards McNeil drive at 20 MPH with gusts up to 30 MPH), I tracked the drive directions. I have been meaning to start doing that and changing field after 2 drives each makes it easier to track. Yellow starts against the very stiff wind.

Yellow Drive #1
1-12 from the 8: Pass by Nick to Rick - incomplete.
2-12 from the 8: Pass by Nick to Canadian - defensed by Treadaway.
3-12 from the 8: Pass by Nick to Canadian - 17 yard gain - stopped by Jesse.
1-15 from the 25: Run by Nick for 5 yards - stopped by Cain and Chenault.
2-10 from the 30: Pass by Nick to Rick - incomplete. Ball a bit behind.
3-10 from the 30: Pass by Nick to Carlos - defensed by Cain.
4-10 from the 30: Nick - sacked by Treadaway. Loss of 5 yards.

Red Drive #1
1-5 from the 25: Cain - sacked by Carlos. Loss of 10 yards. This was why you never give up on the rush. Cain evaded Jeff, Adam, and Carlos each but because Carlos was the first miss, he was in position when Cain came scrambling back his way to avoid the other rushers. Carlos got the flag while on the ground.
2-15 from the 35: Pass by Cain to Anthony - 12 yard gain - stopped by Paul.
3-3 from the 23: Pass by Cain to Treadaway - incomplete.
4-3 from the 23: Pass by Cain to - -7 yard gain - stopped by Jeff.

Yellow Drive #2
1-10 from the 30: Pass by Nick to Jeff - 18 yard gain - stopped by Cain.
1-12 from the 32: Nick - sacked by RChin. Loss of 3 yards. Nick tried to throw it away under pressure but had a foot on the sideline when he did.
2-15 from the 35: Pass by Nick to Paul - incomplete. Deep ball.
3-15 from the 35: Pass by Nick to Paul - intercepted by Anthony - stopped by Paul.

Red Drive #2
1-10 from the 10: Pass by Cain to Jesse - 19 yard gain - stopped by Canadian.
1-11 from the 29: Run by Cain for 4 yards - stopped by Adam.
2-7 from the 33: Pass by Cain to RChin - incomplete.
3-7 from the 33: Pass by Cain to RChin - 8 yard gain - stopped by Canadian.
1-19 from the 39: Pass by Cain to Jesse - incomplete. QB pressure by Adam. Ball long.

3-28 from the 32: Run by Cain for 11 yards - stopped by Nick.
4-17 from the 37: Punt by Cain for 29 yards. Touchback.

With this change of Possession, Yellow now has the wind.

Yellow Drive #3
1-12 from the 8: Pass by Nick to Rick - 6 yard gain - stopped by Jesse.
2-6 from the 14: Pass by Nick to Rick - 11 yard gain - stopped by going out of bounds.
1-15 from the 25: Run by Nick for 7 yards - stopped by Day.
2-8 from the 32: Pass by Nick to Canadian - incomplete.
3-8 from the 32: Pass by Nick to Canadian - 30 yard gain - stopped by Cain.
1-Goal from the 18: Pass by Nick to Rick - incomplete. QB pressure by Chenault.
2-Goal from the 18: Nick - sacked by RChin. Loss of 4 yards.
3-Goal from the 22: Pass by Nick to Rick - 22 yard gain and the TD. Amazing catch. The ball is a little underthrown where the receiver has a better shot at getting back to the ball. Rick adjusts but so does Jesse. Jesse gets his hands on the ball and should have been able to defense the pass but Rick just holds on tight and won't let go. The come down in a heap and simultaneous possession goes to the receiver. Plays like this make me wish we had video to show "Best of" plays at the end of the season. 1 - 0, Yellow.

Red Drive #3
1-12 from the 8: Pass by Cain to Anthony - defensed by Carlos and intercepted by Paul - stopped by RChin. Carlos gets the ball or Cain's arm on the throw and it comes out short. Paul dives for the endzone Ray stopped him at the 1.

Yellow Drive #4
1-Goal from the 1: Pass by Nick to Adam - incomplete. Ball wide.
2-Goal from the 1: Pass by Nick to Paul - 1 yard gain and the TD. 2 - 0, Yellow.

Red Drive #4
1-12 from the 8: Pass by Cain to Anthony - 1 yard gain - stopped by Paul. Quick hit at the line.
2-11 from the 9: Run by Cain for 8 yards - stopped by Adam. Cain dragged Adam about 7 yards.
3-3 from the 17: Pass by Cain to Anthony - defensed by Nick. Nick got the ball on the rush.
4-3 from the 17: Pass by Cain to Anthony - 41 yard gain - stopped by Paul. Paul made a horizontal diving, TD-saving flag.
1-2 from the 22: Pass by Cain to Treadaway - defensed by Adam. Adam got Cain's hand on the rush.
2-2 from the 22: Pass by Cain to Chenault - incomplete. QB pressure by Adam.
3-2 from the 22: Pass by Cain to Anthony - 15 yard gain - stopped by Paul.
1-Goal from the 7: Run by Cain for 7 yards and the TD. 2 - 1, Yellow.

Yellow is back against the wind starting on their 5th drive.

Yellow Drive #5
1-12 from the 8: Run by Nick for 2 yards - stopped by RChin.
2-10 from the 10: Pass by Nick to Carlos - 8 yard gain - stopped by Cain. Carlos makes a very nice "reach down" catch getting the ball below his knees on a crossing route.
3-2 from the 18: Pass by Nick to Canadian - 7 yard gain - stopped by Jesse.
1-15 from the 25: Pass by Nick to an ineligible receiver - incomplete. Play was supposed to be a Cuba Libre with Paul coming off the line. Nick didn't throw to the hook on the play because he was too well covered so he looked for another receiver and then saw Paul 3 yards upfield and not covered.
2-15 from the 25: Pass by Nick to Rick - 5 yard gain - stopped by Cain.
3-10 from the 30: Pass by Nick to Canadian - incomplete. QB pressure by Day. Ball a little long.
4-10 from the 30: Run by Nick for 9 yards - stopped by Anthony.

Red Drive #5
1-19 from the 39: Cain throws the ball away. QB pressure by Carlos and Adam.

Yellow is back against the wind on their 9th drive.

Yellow Drive #9
1-4 from the 24: Pass by Nick to Jeff - incomplete. Ball long.
2-4 from the 24: Pass by Nick to Adam - incomplete. Nice out route, nice throw, bad wind knocks the ball short.
3-4 from the 24: Pass by Nick to Adam - incomplete.
4-4 from the 24: Pass by Nick to Paul - 12 yard gain - stopped by Anthony.
1-Goal from the 12: Nick - sacked by Chenault. Loss of 6 yards.
2-Goal from the 18: Nick - sacked by Day. Loss of 8 yards.
3-Goal from the 26: Pass by Nick to Adam - 6 yard gain - stopped by Jesse. This was a really nicely executed Cuba Libre. Ball was very low but Adam dug it up to control the pitch and then turned to block Jesse to spring Canadian for what looked like a QB. However, Jesse felt that he got the flag before Adam could get the ball off. This was tougher. RChin was on the sideline at this point and thought Adam got the ball off but he was on the wrong side of Adam to see exactly when Jesse got the flag. Since the flag didn't make the pop sound, Adam couldn't be sure if he got the ball off. Jesse himself wasn't positive that the flag was prior to the pitch he said he got the flag really fast. Interestingly, had Adam not "possessed" the ball and instead just did a volleyball-like "set" back to Canadian, the flag wouldn't have mattered. Play ruled dead at the spot of the initial catch.
4-Goal from the 20: Nick - sacked by Chenault. Loss of 7 yards.

Great defensive series for Red - 8 plays went for only 18 yards and after you account for the sacks, it was a -3 yard series.

Red Drive #9
1-13 from the 27: Pass by Cain to Treadaway - incomplete. QB pressure by Carlos.
2-13 from the 27: Pass by Cain to Treadaway - intercepted by Adam who takes it in for the TD. Adam undercut a crossing route. 3 - 1, Yellow.

Red Drive #10
1-12 from the 8: Pass by Cain to Jesse - 26 yard gain - stopped by Paul.
1-6 from the 34: Pass by Cain to Jesse - 27 yard gain - stopped by Canadian.
1-Goal from the 19: Pass by Cain to Day - incomplete. Ball high.
2-Goal from the 19: Pass by Cain to Day - incomplete. Ball short and wide.
3-Goal from the 19: Pass by Cain to RChin - 9 yard gain - stopped by Canadian.
4-Goal from the 10: Pass by Cain to Anthony - incomplete. Ball out of the back of the endzone.

Yellow has the wind again starting their 11th drive.

Yellow Drive #11
1-Goal from the 10: Pass by Nick to Paul - intercepted by Jesse who takes it in for the TD. Gotta call this what it was - stupid cross body/cross field throw that would have been good for about 7 yards. 3 - 2, Yellow.

Yellow Drive #12
1-12 from the 8: Pass by Nick to Carlos - 25 yard gain - stopped by Treadaway.
1-7 from the 33: Pass by Nick to Canadian - 1 yard gain - stopped by RChin and Treadaway.
2-6 from the 34: Pass by Nick to Canadian - 46 yard gain and the TD. Beautiful pass. Nick rolled free, evading the rush and threw a beaut. 4 - 2, Yellow.

Red Drive #12
1-12 from the 8: Pass by Cain to Treadaway - incomplete. Ball low.
2-12 from the 8: Pass by Cain to Chenault - 5 yard gain - stopped by Adam. This was intended to be a Cuba Libre to Anthony but Adam got the flag fast and was in a position to see the pitch and flag since he got Chenault's side flag.
3-7 from the 13: Pass by Cain to Jesse - incomplete. Quick throw - ball low.
4-7 from the 13: Pass by Cain to Treadaway - defensed by Canadian.

That's game - 4 - 2, Yellow. Yellow's 5th win of the year.

We used the new punt rules for the first time but it didn't make any difference because Red's two punts were with the wind and resulted in touchbacks.

Awards:

MVP goes to Canadian this week (all good things come to those who wait.

Offensive Player of the Game is a bit tougher since there was so much wind but I'm giving it to Nick who made enough plays with his arm (other than that one bad one - Chenault? What don't we do? We don't throw against the body!).

Defensive Player of the Game goes to Adam who did a little bit of everything with a Pick-Six, defensed pass, sacks and pressures.

Week 25 Game Summary:

R - Adam, Chenault, Jeff, Jesse, Mike, & Nick
Y - Canadian, Carlos, Torrey, Washington, & Zieser

Game was 5 on 5 because we couldn't get 12 players on a perfectly good day for football. Welcome to what Chenault calls skinny-fast ball and what I call an old school game because 15 years ago we played 4 on 4 or 5 on 5 every week.

NOTE - I had some serious recording difficulties this week due to a new recorder that didn't work exactly like the old one so I missed a number of plays. I believe I have it largely worked out but I know I am missing some plays and have too many "unknowns" on plays. The only good thing is that I am fairly confident that I have all the TDs and most of the other big plays correctly records though some yards may be off a bit. My thanks to everyone who helped me filling in the blanks by answering my email requests for confirmation and clarification.

Red Drive #11
1-12 from the 8: Pass by Nick to Mike - incomplete. Nice out and up but Mike bends the route in a bit after Nick had already thrown more of a sideline route.
2-12 from the 8: Pass by Nick to Chenault - 7 yard gain - stopped by Carlos.
3-5 from the 15: Pass by Nick to Jesse - 65 yard gain and the TD. Jesse caught a relatively short pass (10-15 yards) and then did a lot of work - this wasn't one of those straight streaks. He had to get by 2 guys in the first 10 yards of YAC and then outrun Canadian (which he has not been able to do the past few weeks - no slight on Jesse at all, Canadian has been getting quite a few deep TD-saving flags this last month). 6 - 6, Tie.

Yellow Drive #11
1-12 from the 8: Zieser - sacked by Chenault. Loss of 2 yards.
2-14 from the 6: Pass by Zieser to Torrey - 2 yard gain - stopped by Mike.

2-12 from the 8: Pass by Zieser to Washington - 14 yard gain - stopped by Nick.
1-18 from the 22: Pass by Zieser to Washington - intercepted by Adam - stopped by Zieser. Adam was the QB rusher on this play and stepped in front of the slant route.

Red Drive #13
1-Goal from the 19: Pass by Nick to Adam - 19 yard gain and the TD. 8 - 7, Red.

Yellow Drive #13
1-12 from the 8: Pass by Canadian to Torrey - 6 yard gain - stopped by Jeff.
2-6 from the 14: Pass by Canadian to Carlos - 9 yard gain - stopped by Adam.
1-17 from the 23: Pass by Canadian to Zieser - 16 yard gain - stopped by Mike.
2-1 from the 39: Pass by Canadian to Washington - 9 yard gain - stopped by Jesse.
1-12 from the 32: Pass by Canadian to Torrey - 6 yard gain - stopped by going out of bounds. Adam was chasing Canadian hard to the right and Torrey shadowed Canadian downfield. Canadian made beautiful throw straight up the sideline as he was about to go out and Torrey stuck two feet to make the catch and step out - textbook.
2-6 from the 26: Pass by Canadian to Carlos - defensed by Chenault. Ball short and Chenault nearly picks it.
3-6 from the 26: Pass by Canadian to Torrey - 11 yard gain - stopped by Jeff.

2-1 from the 19: Pass by Nick to Chenault - 18 yard gain - stopped by Canadian.
1-3 from the 37: Pass by Nick to Jesse - defensed by Washington. Ball was on the body on an out-cross and Washington reached in beautifully to knock it down.
2-3 from the 37: Pass by Nick to Adam - 20 yard gain - stopped by Torrey and Zieser.
1-3 from the 23: Pass by Nick to Adam - 23 yard gain and the TD. Play was designed to be a fake to Adam/iso on Jesse but when the blitz came, Nick improvised and hit Adam anyway. 9 - 8, Red.

Yellow Drive #14
1-12 from the 8: Pass by Canadian to Zieser - 19 yard gain - stopped by Nick.
1-13 from the 27: Pass by Canadian to Carlos - 12 yard gain - stopped by Mike.
2-1 from the 39: Pass by Canadian to Torrey - 41 yard gain and the TD. Jeff nearly picked it but he popped the ball up and Torrey made a great heads-up play behind him. We go to overtime! 9 - 9, Tie.

So how many QBs would like to play without a line a little more often? Hmmm? Over 1000 yards of passing and very, very high completion rates (55.26% overall). If you remove all the drops . . . 2 QBs with ratings over 100.

376 yards? Really Jesse? Been eating your Wheaties? Jesse led receivers: 12 of 15 for 339 yards, 3 TDs, and 5 first downs PLUS 1 run for 37 yards and a TD. But he wasn't the only one with big days. We had 4 other players who had over 100 yards and 3 who had more than 60. Adam (who despite some very good numbers is still playing on a badly hurt foot) was 9 of 15 for 144 yards, 4 first downs and 5 TDs (possibly doubling his total for the year). Of course the 4 drops early in the game showed what happens when declining hands don't play for essentially a month. Torrey had a big debut with 8 catches for 131 yards and 2 TDs and 4 first downs. Canadian had 112 total yards for 2 receiving and a rushing TD, plus a 1st down. Welcome back Washington with 6 catches for 110 yards, a TD, and 4 other first downs. Zieser and Chenault had similar numbers with a TD each and 67 and 73 yards, respectively. Carlos was definitely proving to be a possession receiver with 7 grabs of 10 targets for 62 yards.

Zieser was the leading defender this week with 2 picks (one a pick-six) and 2 defensed passes (and I don't think he tackled anyone). Canadian had the biggest defensive play of the game with a endzone to endzone TD plus a sack. Washington had a defensed pass, a pick and a QB pressure. Chenault also had a QB pressure and a sack as well as 2 defensed passes. Jesse had 2 defensed passes. Adam got a pick and 3 sacks (actually it was 2 QB sacks and 2 stops for losses but I only recorded one and couldn't figure out where the other one went so I left it off). Nick had 3 QB pressures.

MVP - this is pretty easy, right? Jesse. If Yellow had won, it would have been Canadian.

Defensive Player of the Game - Zieser. Canadian had the most dramatic defensive play but I think Zieser's numbers give him the award this week. Adam was a candidate as well but in this game, I think it makes sense to "weigh" secondary plays a bit heavier since the lack of a line really changes the "pressure/rush" situation.

Offensive Player of the Game - this is hardest because we had many players with big offensive days. 5 TDs is a very nice game but you can't reward 4 drops (even if they were mostly early in the game) so Adam doesn't get it. That leaves Nick and Canadian as the key candidates. Nick had over 500 yards, 9 TDs, and would have had a much higher completion percentage had he not been saddled with Adam's 4 drops. Canadian did a little bit of everything - throwing for 3 TDs, running for 1, and catching 2 others.

No offense to Nick but this week, I'm giving it to Canadian. It would have been odd to say that a player would have been MVP had his team won but his performance wasn't good enough for either of the secondary awards and I believe Canadian was playing QB for the first time this season. Also, Nick played very well and had big numbers but I think he'd admit that a lot of his monsterous numbers had to do with no line and facing less pressure than he normally has to fight through.
