Game was 5 on 5 because we couldn't get 12 players on a perfectly good day for football. Welcome to what Chenault calls skinny-fast ball and what I call an old school game because 15 years ago we played 4 on 4 or 5 on 5 every week.

NOTE - I had some serious recording difficulties this week due to a new recorder that didn't work exactly like the old one so I missed a number of plays. I believe I have it largely worked out but I know I am missing some plays and have too many "unknowns" on plays. The only good thing is that I am fairly confident that I have all the TDs and most of the other big plays correctly records though some yards may be off a bit. My thanks to everyone who helped me filling in the blanks by answering my email requests for confirmation and clarification.

376 yards? Really Jesse? Been eating your Wheaties? Jesse led receivers: 12 of 15 for 339 yards, 3 TDs, and 5 first downs PLUS 1 run for 37 yards and a TD. But he wasn't the only one with big days. We had 4 other players who had over 100 yards and 3 who had more than 60. Adam (who despite some very good numbers is still playing on a badly hurt foot) was 9 of 15 for 144 yards, 4 first downs and 5 TDs (possibly doubling his total for the year). Of course the 4 drops early in the game showed what happens when declining hands don't play for essentially a month. Torrey had a big debut with 8 catches for 131 yards and 2 TDs and 4 first downs. Canadian had 112 total yards for 2 receiving and a rushing TD, plus a 1st down. Welcome back Washington with 6 catches for 110 yards, a TD, and 4 other first downs. Zieser and Chenault had similar numbers with a TD each and 67 and 73 yards, respectively. Carlos was definitely proving to be a possession receiver with 7 grabs of 10 targets for 62 yards.

Zieser was the leading defender this week with 2 picks (one a pick-six) and 2 defensed passes (and I don't think he tackled anyone). Canadian had the biggest defensive play of the game with a endzone to endzone TD plus a sack. Washington had a defensed pass, a pick and a QB pressure. Chenault also had a QB pressure and a sack as well as 2 defensed passes. Jesse had 2 defensed passes. Adam got a pick and 3 sacks (actually it was 2 QB sacks and 2 stops for losses but I only recorded one and couldn't figure out where the other one went so I left it off). Nick had 3 QB pressures.

Awards:

MVP - this is pretty easy, right? Jesse. If Yellow had won, it would have been Canadian.

Defensive Player of the Game - Zieser. Canadian had the most dramatic defensive play but I think Zieser's numbers give him the award this week. Adam was a candidate as well but in this game, I think it makes sense to "weigh" secondary plays a bit heavier since the lack of a line really changes the "pressure/rush" situation.

Offensive Player of the Game - this is hardest because we had many players with big offensive days. 5 TDs is a very nice game but you can't reward 4 drops (even if they were mostly early in the game) so Adam doesn't get it. That leaves Nick and Canadian as the key candidates. Nick had over 500 yards, 9 TDs, and would have had a much higher completion percentage had he not been saddled with Adam's 4 drops. Canadian did a little bit of everything - throwing for 3 TDs, running for 1, and catching 2 others.

No offense to Nick but this week, I'm giving it to Canadian. It would have been odd to say that a player would have been MVP had his team won but his performance wasn't good enough for either of the secondary awards and I believe Canadian was playing QB for the first time this season. Also, Nick played very well and had big numbers but I think he'd admit that a lot of his monsterous numbers had to do with no line and facing less pressure than he normally has to fight through.

Punt Discussion:

The addition of live punting to the game has been a definite improvement to the game but it has not been without flaws. First, the average punt is probably 30 yards or less. Every so often someone will kick a boomer but more often than not, that's not the case. Also, some have suggested that if the ball lands inside the 5 it should stay there. Another suggestion is that if the ball rolls the ball should be placed where it stops (or goes out of bounds).

I am open to the idea of allowing a team to have to start inside the 5 though I fear the arguments that will occur when the ball lands very near the goal line ("Touchback" "No it wasn't! It's on the 1!").

I'm less open to the idea of letting the ball roll because the punting team would essentially be able to "further their punt" while the receiving team could at best hope to catch it and move it back 5 yards. So it seems unbalanced.

Here's what I propose:

1) Punter can kick from the line of scrimmage rather than 7 yards back.
2) If the ball lands inside the 8 (without being caught), the ball starts where the punt first landed.
3) If the ball lands at or outside the 8, the punting team can move it 5 yards).
4) If the receiving team catches the ball (no matter where on the field), normal rules apply (receiving team can move it 5 yards).
5) If the ball goes out of bounds, the ball is placed at the spot where the ball crossed the sideline.
6) If the ball lands in the endzone or out of bounds past the goal line, the ball is placed at the 8.

I'm open to suggestions.

Midseason Rant

We have got to come up with a way to settle close calls that involves less arguing. It is greatly detracting from our game. Everyone who played in a game a few weeks ago that didn't have a single argued call can tell you it's a lot more fun.

Here are the most commonly disputed calls:

1) Whether the QB was sacked before the ball was thrown;
2) Whether the receiver was in bounds for the catch (two feet in) and whether the runner stepped out of bounds (and where); and
3) Premature calls while the play is still alive.

Of these, the first four are most serious in terms of frequency, impact on the game, and vociferousness of the argument.

Pass/Sack - The problem with this one is that in almost every case, the QB was in fact in the process of throwing the ball and so the question is whether or not the ball was out of the QB's hand by the time the flag was pulled. Often the person in the best place to make this call is one who was out of the play but not too far away. The lineman getting the flag often has his head down - his best angle is when he is coming in from behind on the QB's throwing arm-side. The QB may not hear the flag pop as he's throwing since people are often yelling. Having people yell when the ball is away might help a bit but I doubt it since there is the potential for early calls on the throw as well as the sack. A referee could clearly help this situation since the ref would be behind the line of scrimmage and his primary duty would be to look for Sack/Throw.

Feet In/Out - The problem with this one is that with the exception of 1 sideline and the 40 yard line, we have no lines to speak off on our field. Yes, it is possible to see some of the lines occasionally (I can usually find all but those where the grass is completely gone as we had at one end of the field we used this last week) but generally not during the play. So the key in such plays is to have other players marking the feet and then looking carefully for the line to see if the feet are in. If the defender has really good coverage, he's not likely to be in a good position to mark the feet (since his head will be up tracking the ball to try to pick or defense it). At the same time, players who are more than 15 yards away really have little hope of seeing it clearly.

A second ref could help with this because we'd place him deep and along the sideline that has no painted line. Another solution which I would be willing to pay for is to buy green paint and a line painter - but we'd need to find the right color in a can that is use for ground marking (if you doubt my willingness, ask Day or Nick about the lines I cut into the field at Murchison years ago). I figure the school wouldn't get ticked if we got paint that was close to grass-colored - noticeable enough that players could see it but not so noticeable that it would screw up the soccer markings.

Premature Calls - The problem here is when a player yells "sack" or "got you" or "TD" etc. before the play is really over. This last week, Nick had a nice run where he was missed twice in quick succession early in the play but people were calling him down even though he had all three flags. This is the one that should be easiest to fix. If you're getting the flag, don't yell until it is in your hand. If you're not in the play, don't yell until you clearly see the flag in someone's hand.

One thing that seems to exacerbate the above problems is calls made by players who are not close to the play. Now, I know that sometimes distance doesn't necessarily mean that you can't see a play (such as the Sack/Pass issue where a player some distance away but with a clear line of sight), but often it does (particularly on the Feet In/Out issue).

I now open this up for discussion. I'm happy to listen to suggestions people have. Refs could work but that would either add costs or require people to sit out on every series (even if we have even numbers because we'd need 2 refs). So I'd really rather find ways to avoid needing refs.

Both QBs had to suffer through some drops by receivers (and Adam wasn't even playing receiver) so it was a rough day. The wind didn't help either so both QBs had a completion rate of around 35%. Each was sacked times 4 as well but Street put up more yards dispite throwing more picks.

Jesse led in yards with 97 on 4 catches which went for a TD and 3 first downs. BB and Street each had 94 yards on 4 carries with BB getting a TD and 3 first downs and Street getting a TD and a 1st down. Canadian was next with 8 catches for 80 yards, 2 TDs, and 2 1st downs. Cain came down next with 6 catches for 77 yards, a TD, and a 1st down. Nick had 10 runs for 67 yards which resulted in 3 first downs. Josh had a TD and a 1st down on 2 catches good for 57 yards. Canadian had 13 flags which are worth mentioning since so many of them were of players that he was not covering and when he also had a number of TD-saving flags. He aslo had a pick and a sack. Leading receiver for the day was Anthony who was only targeted 3 times but had 3 catches for 2 TDs and a 1st down. He also had 4 rushes and 159 combined yards. Zieser was next with 96 yards 2 TDs, and 4 first downs on 6 receptions.
