Week 11 Summary - 5 on 5 that ended up 0-0. At least we were moving the ball around and it wasn't just a bunch of 3 and outs. It was probably the most fun 0-0 game I've played in.

Week 12 Summary - No game. We only had 4 on the Evite so I cancelled it.

Week 13 Preview - Its the last game of the calendar year (not of the season : ) and most of the people who were unavailable last week indicated that they'd be around this week so hopefully we'll have a great game.

Week 10 Game Summary -
Well we only had 11 and Matt Day had to leave at 10:30 so it was a bit of a mixed bag. None of our usual quarterbacks were out but we found that the new Leo (ironically a friend of Leo's) and Brad who came out for the first time in week 9. Now we can't have two Leos so I'm thinking we should call New Leo "Neo" or if he doesn't want to sit with a vacant look on his face, "NeLo".

In any case, we found an interesting 11 person variant where we played 6 on 5 with an all time QB and a 2 man line; much more fun than 5 on 6 with an extra defender. We played that until Matt had to leave at 10:30 at which point we converted to 5 on 5. Yellow won 5 to 4 by stopping Red on the final drive.

Week 11 Preview -
Not sure what to say other than lets get folks out again. Been great to see all the new faces over the last couple weeks. If any of you have some friends who would like to play, we still need to pick up some more regulars so go ahead and invite them on the Evite.

Week 9 Summary

Well after having only 7 in Week 8 we get 18 in Week 9 and had a great game. Game balls go to Brandon as offensive weapon of the week, Matt for never giving up on any play (and bringing a fair number to a halt), and Red Team's teamwork in run blocking. I can remember nearly everyone having at least one really good play and that's what makes it fun.

Another great thing about week 9 was that the reason we had so many players is we got a bunch of new guys show up and they got right into it. Someone get me their email addresses so I can get them on the Evite.

Week 10 Preview
Hopefully more of the same. There's no UT game so there won't be a reason to leave early.

Week 8 Game Summary
So sad. So very sad. A beautiful morning with cool temperatures and overcast skys and we can't even get 8 players? I know it was raining pretty hard early but by 8:30, it wasn't raining at all. We didn't have a drop the entire game. Besides, even if we did, WE PLAY IN THE RAIN! Understand, last year, it was raining at 7:00/8:00ish in the morning on many Saturdays and then magically it would lighten up or stop by 9:00 or so almost every single time. They say god likes football so maybe that's a sign. In any case, I get up early and start monitoring the weather radar looking to see what's coming. I've gotten very good predicting whether we'll have a window of weather to play in so next time, get up and read your email. My forecast will be there.

So with only 7, we got creative and played 3 on 3 with an all-time QB but to make it interesting, we had every player play 2 series back-to-back as QB. That meant I had to throw and but fortunately I got lucky. I drew up good plays and generally picked the right receiver but half of my throws were uncatchable, a quarter were bad but catchable and a quater were good. Fortunately, that's all it took because I threw 2 TDs. Matt Day had 2 also. No one else had more than one. Like I said, a sad week when Matt and I are the top QBs : P

Week 9 Preview
Lets look for something better this week. Week 7 was a great game. Lets go for something like that. I'm looking for 14-16 guys to come out. Now, Saturday the 3rd is the Big 12 Championship Game. It's on at noon. So we need to have people show up on time (9:00 or preferably earlier) so we can get in a good game that ends at 11:30 so people can get home for the Championship if they're interested.

REMEMBER - WE PLAY IN THE RAIN - seriously (have I made that clear enough? : )

Week 7 Game Summary

Well, after having to cancel week 6 due to lack to available players, this week was a strong return to form. We had 14 by 9:15 and a couple stragglers show up a bit later. Jeremy put on an offensive and defensive clinic with TD passes and a rediculous run as well as taking 2 picks back for TDs.

Week 8 Preview
Enought people said they'd be able to play this weekend that it looks like we'll be playing. Still, it wouldn't hurt to look for a few new guys. I put the game up on Austin 360, Craigslist, and Evite Events last Thursday night and got an email this morning so that should be one new guy.

11/12/05 GAME CANCELLED

I wanted to let everyone know that Flag Football for 11/12/05 has been canceled. The EVITE currently shows 5 yeses, 3 maybes and a whole bunch of nos. I'm not going to ask people to come out when if EVERYBODY who has replied yes and maybe were to show we'd only have 8. I will play with 8 but I know some guys don't like playing that with that few. Besides, I'm not sure of one or two of the yeses because of the "RSVP for whole series" problem.

I'm really disappointed (and desperately needed to play this week) but better you all have the chance to make other plans than for you to show up and sit around for a hour only to realize we have 5 or worse.

Game on for 11/19/05

Wednesday, November 09, 2005

Hey,

What is the deal you pansies...8 people? Come on. Let's play some ball!!!!!

Week 5 Game Summary

Well, we were a little short last week. 11 Players meant we had to play without a line and do a bit more running around than normal (no line means less pressure, means more time for the QB to stand and wait, means more running around down field). It wasn't a bad day all things considered though. Lot of positives in the game. Leo had no picks however, his/our team unfortunately didn't have a win either. Still, it was fun to have a little old school action.

Friday, November 04, 2005

I was just looking at a web site about McNeil high football and it looks like the last varsity game is tonight.

There is a note from the coach that says they missed the play-offs.

Here's the schedule.

4th Game Summary

DAMN, now that was a fine game. 8 on 8 is the best Wish we hadn't had the injuries though (Nick, call me and I'll tell you about that fracture. It heals pretty easily if you have the right brace and follow my directions.)

Final Score 5.5 to 3 and no touchdown for me.

BTW - Matt, I didn't realize that those guys watching us were friends of yours. I would have been fine bringing them in. Its just that since we have SO many guys now (3rd game notwithstanding) that I don't want to bring in guys who no one knows. Sorry about that.

Week 2 Postscript - Week 3 Preview

Okay, while 10 on 10 works well, 10 on 10 with 10 extra guys to sub in was rather somthing. Glad there's so much interest.

2 Major Issues for future weeks:

Issue 1) Everyone who plays needs to bring 2 shirts a dark one (black, blue, red, dark gray, etc) and a light one (white, light gray, light blue, etc) from now one. We've got so many guys and so many substitutions, its getting too hard for quarterbacks and even everyone else to figure out whose on who's team. If you bring other people out, be sure they bring a dark and a light shirt too.

Issue 2) For those of you who didn't make it out and to those who did but didn't get the word, the McNeil Athletic Director came over to talk to us. He doesn't want us using the fields we've been using until after their football season. That's 5+ weeks or so (they have 4 games and at least one playoff game coming it seems and there could be a bye in there). After the season, he said he doesn't care. He was VERY cool about it.

So that leaves us two choices:

1) We can play on the smaller field behind the softball field for free until the HS football season is over. The field is about 37 yards at its narrowest point but is wider at the other end so if need be we could play on a slightly odd field and always play towards the same end if we keep getting really big games. But if we get smaller groups that allow 8 on 8 max, the field is large enough.

2) The other option is we can pay the school $100 to get our game each week on the good field. If we keep getting 20+ guys a week, I think it would be worth paying the money. I'm calling the AD this week to learn more about it. However I need to say this: I buy a lot of equipment ($11 per belt) and ice and stuff each week which I don't mind doing because I love this game. But I'm not paying the $100 a week out of my pocket. So if we want to do this, we've all gotta chip in (even guys who come late or leave early). If people don't want to deal with the money then the smaller field is fine for a month or two (Thanksgiving at the latest, I'd think).

The AD said the only reason he has to charge for the good fields is that if he didn't, thet'd get torn up because TONS of people would be out there every weekend. So the money is really to try to dissuade people from using them and to compensate the school for the wear and tear during the season.

What I want to do is talk to the AD and see if he'd be willing to work with us. If we get a smaller game, we play on the small field for free. If we get a bunch more showing up, we send the school a check retroactively (unless he's there on Saturday mornings and could collect). That way, if we need the big field and use it, we pay for it. If we don't need it, we don't pay for it. I think he'd be willing go this route. I'll update the Evite or the blog later this week with the final info.

Assuming he's willing to be flexible and not require us to reserve/pay in advance, I want everyone who comes out this week to bring $5 in one dollar bills. It's a pain but that way we can divide it up pretty evenly. We'll only use the pay field if we get 20 guys or more. So the max we'd pay is $5 each. I think its likely we'll have 20 guys or more next week so plan on paying. Its cheaper than a movie, lasts longer and is a hell of a lot more fun.

Week 2 Preview

Well this season is looking very pomising. It's week 2 and the weather looks like its going to be perfect. 60 degrees at 9:00 rising to 74 at noon. With a high for the day of 80, even if it gets hotter faster than expected, we're looking at very comfortable temperatures. I'm so excited, I didn't sleep LAST night. Can't imagine how many sleep aids I'm going to need to take tonight. I love cool weather.

All,
I had a blast. I had a lot of rust to knock off. Looking forward to next week. I won't be late this time.

Post Game 1 Wrap-up

Well, we had our first game of the 10th full season yesterday. Honestly, I'm not sure we've ever has a better first game. The play was pretty strong and guys weren't dead after the first 40 minutes. Fortunately, the weather really cooperated and gave us a day that started in the 70s and finished in the low 80s by the time we were done at 11:30. We also got several new players out of it. Hope they come back next week - some good guys in to have in the mix.

I was a bit sore yesterday but not the way I expected. When eating lunch, I noticed that my face was sore when I chewed. I think I strained a muscle smiling during the game. I hadn't had that much fun in a long time and it wasn't because I had a particularly good game - I was only thrown to once and Matt (welcome back Matt!) made a great play to limit me to about 2 YAC.

Today, I'm also sore but the worst is expected tomorrow. However, I followed my own advice and worked legs out this morning at about 60-70% normal weight (no plyometrics though - I'm not stupid : ) The most pleasant surprise yesterday was that my sore leg really held up well. I didn't aggravate it at all - though I only tried running 80-85% speed. Still, a nice test. I'm starting to think it might be okay.

Hope everyone else had as much fun as I did.

Friday, September 30, 2005

Well the season is upon us. I'm so excited I can hardly eat. I'm checking the Evite every half hour to see if anyone else RSVPs. I'm checking weather.com every hour to see if by some miracle the forecast for Saturday has not climbed by yet another degree (on Wednesday it was predicting a high in the 80s and I thought it would be a Football Miracle). I'm hoping that my leg doesn't give out on the first cut . . .

Looking forward to seeing everyong on Saturday. Please try to show up by 9:00 (or better yet early). Several thoughts behind that:

1) Its going to start off relatively cool tomorrow but then get pretty hot. If we start early we can enjoy the weather.

2) A lot of rust needs to be shaken off. If we start early we can get warmed up and start playing before it gets hot (see item 1).

3) The Horns are playing at 11:00 and I want to be sure that if we lose some folks to go home and watch that, we still have had a good game to start with.

Couple other thoughts/reminders:

1) Those of you who have never played with us, you will be sore afterwards. You will be most sore on Monday (about 48 hours after playing). When you find yourself walking funny for the next couple of days wondering if you ever want to play again, the answer is you do. Trust me on this. If you play every week then after about 2-3 weeks of playing, you will be a bit sore after playing but it won't be that bad. Its only when you start that its really bad.

2) Returning players, see above. This applies to you too.

3) Everyone, if you workout, I suggest you do a leg workout at about 70-80% of normal on Sunday after playing on Saturday. You may think I'm nuts but someone suggested it to me 2 years ago and I was surprised at what a difference it made. Much less sore. Also, don't do leg workouts on Fridays if you plan on playing Saturday. Thursday is the latest you should work legs before playing on Saturday.

Now that's a player

And I thought I was committed to playing! This guy plays HS football and has no legs - none - no hips, no nothing:

Less than a Week
Well, I reinjured my leg in NY. The therapy had been helping but then I hurt it again pretty bad. For the first day, it felt like it did back when I first injured it (in February or March). Its doesn't hurt quite as much today but its still bad.

This is more than a little bit of a problem. I think I'm going to be really limited this season. I can't believe that 5-6 months after I pulled the damn muscle, its STILL not healed and now is unlikely to be healed any time soon.

I'm going to buy a ref's shirt before the game this weekend.

Koontz Excuse

Some of you from last year may have noticed that Sean Koontz is on the Evite and you wondered "who the hell is that?" because he replied to the Evite almost every week but he NEVER actually came out to play. Well Sean is part of what I call the second wave of players. He started playing with us in the 2nd or 3rd year of our game (at the same time as Brian) and he used to be a regular - regularly late, regularly requiring a call from the field to get his ass out of bed, etc. He also usually played in jeans and brought a large Starbucks with him each week.

In any case, Sean didn't play last year and I don't think he played the year before either. I just keep him on the list because rather than admit he's never going to play again, he just keeps RSVP'ing that he can't make it because he's out of town and then tells us where and often provides a little story. So basically, he's still on the list because he amuses me.

Its Thursday the 22nd and I've just read this year's first excuse - Vegas. Not a very interesting beginning but I'm sure he'll step it up.

Two Weeks Away

Well, we're two weeks away from another season. I've stepped up my leg rehab another notch of the last couple of days - incorporating some plyometric exercises to start putting greater strain on the leg I injured last March or so. Two weeks isn't a lot of time to get ready but I'm hoping it will be enough.

My bigger problem is that because of my leg, I've been unable to do any cycling this summer. So my endurance going into this season is going to SUCK. I'm worried it'll be November before I'm worth a shit unless it gets a lot cooler a lot sooner than I'm guessing it will.

Hope the rest of you are getting ready.

Ran into Joe Shields today at the doctor's office (we were both getting blood drawn) and caught up. Juan had mentioned in a comment earlier that he was wondering where Joe was. Well, Joe coaches his daughter's soccer team on Saturdays in the fall and spring so he's retired. Still, good to run into him and reminice.

Ready to talk some shit!!!!!!!

Monday, September 12, 2005

Well the weekend is over and I have no one in tonight's game fantasy-wise. I'm just glad I'm a lot better in our league than my fantasy team is in my fantasy league.

Sunday, September 11, 2005

Well this is the first post of the new AustinFlagFootball Blog. AustinFlagFootball is going into its 10th season. I'm the only one left from the original group but that's what makes the game great - each year we lose a few but we also gain a few and the game just keeps going strong.

Those of you who have played know we have a competitive and physical but above all, FUN game. We play a contact game - offensive lines, open-handed blocking, stiff-arms, are all legal. Grabbing a guy to slow him down and wait for help or to get a flag is legal. If you're interested in coming out and having some fun, let me know.

We use Evite to keep track of who's playing each week but Evite is a lousy way to have a conversation, make suggestions, or share ideas. This Blog is intended to provide a communications hub for those in our game. I'm hoping people will have fun with it - post fun links, talk about the game, whatever. My only request is that we keep the posts fun, like the game.
