Week Game Summary:

First "normal-sized" game this year at 7 on 7.

This was the first game we decided to let the QB run 1 per set of downs. I leave it to others to debate. I will say this, in the game, I didn't think it made a big difference and it was fun to run the Option a couple times. Having said that, Nick and Burleson ran for a total of 130 yards on 11 carries with Nick taking off 8 times and Burleson running 3 times - they weren't bad decisions and I don't know about Burleson but only a few of Nick's runs were "called" and one of those was the option with Kuzi. Also worth mentioning is that 2/3rds of Burleson's rushing yardage came on one play when 3 Red players missed him and I had was down field 40 yards playing safety to double the deep receiver.

Burleson 11 3 47 23.40% 125 2 6 4 -17 14.18

This was a bad day for passing. Neither QB had 30% completions. Even if you discount the 3 drops that each QB had to endure, the rates were low. We had 22 total completions and 9 picks in the game.

Receiving/Rushing Stats:
Players Recpts Targets Yards Rec TDs Rushes Yards Rush TDs Combined Blocks 1st Downs

Jermaine 2 9 3 0 1 8 0 11 0 0
Jesse 1 9 6 0 1 -5 0 1 0 0

Curtis was Mr Sure Hands today with 3 catches on 4 targets with a TD. Ray only had 2 catches and only 7 yards but they were both TDs so it's hard to scoff at that. Our yardage leader was Chris with 77 yards.

Defensive Stats:

Jermaine 5 1 0 0 0 0 0 0
Jesse 6 2 2 0 1 0 0 0

Lot of defense today. 3 players had 2 picks each: Nick, Jesse, and Kuzi. Nick and Jesse each had 2 defensed passes as well as did Curtis and Julian. Our sack leader for the day was Kuzi with 3 though Ray had a safety. Some of the problems that QBs had surely was pressure because there were a total of 7 sacks and 10 QB pressures. Chris was the pressure leader with 4.

Special Teams Stats:
Players Punts Punt Yards Punts Fielded
Nick 1 20 0
Burleson 2 40 0
Jesse 0 0 1

Today was not really a great punting day with 20 yard average punts.

Awards:
Nick wins MVP - he scored by passing, running, and catching a ball that was deflected up in the endzone. I don't remember that ever happening before. Nick also had other big defensive plays.

Jesse is our defensive player of the game with 2 picks, 2 passes defensed, and a sack. Kuzi was in the running for defensive player of the game with all his 2 picks, 3 sacks/stops for losses, and 1 QB pressure. However, Jesse was on time while Kuzi wasn't. There are two types of late:
1) late but we still start on time so the result is just that the player has less opportunity to play and make plays; and
2) late when we don't start on time and so everyone either loses out.
The second is more grievous. Love playing with ya Kuzi and love the new gloves but Academy is open Fridays until 9. : )

Our offensive player of the game was a bit harder to decide because of the paucity of offense. We had less than 250 yards of passing this week and less than 400 yards overall. Some of that was because Red started first and goal from inside of the 20 four times but still, it was not exactly an monster display of offense. I'm going to give it to Ray who had the 1st 2 TD game of the year.

Week 3 Awards - This week was relatively easy. Street ceded the QB slot but ultimately came up with 65 yards on receiving/rushing and a TD. Then on defense he had 2 picks (including one that he took back for a TD) and a sack. Street is MVP.

Offensive Player of the Game was a little tougher. Jesse led in yards and had a TD but he only had 2 receptions and one of them went 70 yards. Meanwhile Chris had 4 receptions (tied with Ray for the most) plus he had 2 rushes on Cuba Libres and accounted for 4 first downs.

Finally, on defense we had 4 great performances. Ron had 4 defensed passes. Kuzi had a pick, a defensed pass, and a sack. Ethan had a pick and 2 sacks Other nice defensive performances were had by Ray and Jess who each had a pick and a defensed pass. But our Defensive Player of the Game was Mark with 3 defensed passes (one of which turned into an INT by Ethan), 1.5 sacks and half a pressure - all but one of these plays contributed to stifling drives (i.e. there was only one drive by Yellow where Mark made a big play where the Yellow still scored).

Week 1 Awards:

Since we did not have the Offensive and Defensive Players of the game awards at the time I transcribed the game from week 1, I'm going to start by posting those awards. As I mentioned at the time, the

MVP (as previously reported) - Kuzi.

Offensive Player of the Game - Cain who had led the game in passing despite 5 sacks/stops for loss worth -25 yards and who added in another 45 yards running/receiving. He threw for a TD and had no picks. His early running caused the Red defense to have to shift it's rushing tactics by putting an extra rusher in on nearly every down (though, he probably wishes he hadn't caused the Red defense to change tactics : )

Defensive Player of the Game - Adam who had 4 flags and 3 of them were for losses. He also had a pick and a QB pressure and a pass defensed by hitting the QB's arm.
Week 2 Awards:

MVP - This goes to Mark. The two contenders were Mark and Street. While Street did more on offense than Mark he didn't have as big an impact on defense. Mark was the leading receiver and thus essentially 2nd most productive offensive player in the game. While he didn't have gaudy defensive stats, he was part of strong defensive line and finally, his 47 yard punt was the longest of the year and pinned the other team on the 5 where only a very heads-up play by Nick to get rid of the ball while wrapped up saved a safety by Red.

Offensive Player of the Game - The first easy decision: Street. Street had the highest completion percentage and lead with 190 yards of passing. He threw for 2 and ran another TD.

Defensive Player of the Game - We had a number of very strong defensive performances. Canadian had 2 picks and 2 defensed passes. Barry had 3 defensed passes and a half QB pressure. Adam had 2 pressures and 2 sacks. Chenault had 2 sacks and a half QB pressure. All that makes this rather tough.

Now, someone recently suggested to me that I take a look at the plays themselves and consider their impact on the game. By that count, Chenault's 2 sacks were very big. The first on 3rd and 9 led to 4th and 23 and a punt - at that time the game was 1-0, Yellow. The QB pressure came on the last drive of the game and the 2nd sack actually ended the game and sealed the victory for Red. Neither Adam's nor Barry's big plays had a serious impact on the final of the game. However, Canadian's are a different matter.

While Canadian's first defensed pass had no impact (Red scored on the drive) Canadian's 1st pick gave yellow a short field and led to the first score of the game. His second defensed pass caused a turnover on downs and his second pick was in the endzone. These plays were on successive drives and helped keep Yellow in the game even though it was already 4-1, Red. Take away his plays and Yellow would have likely been buried much earlier in the game. Take away Chenault's plays on what turned out to be the last drive and perhaps Yellow scores, even if they did, Red still would have had the lead.

Given that both players had very impactful big plays and but that Canadian had more of them (3 drive enders), Canadian wins it this week.
Weekly Awards:

After consideration of input, here is what I've come up with:

1) There will be three awards each week: MVP, Offensive Player of the Game, and Defensive Player of the Game.

2) The three awards will not always go to players on the winning team though it could happen - after all, the winning team sometimes wins because they have multiple great performances.

3) If am having difficulty deciding on award winners, I will seek input from people who were at the game and who I judge capable of being impartial - I did this last year when I needed feedback and it helped. FYI - if you've ever called me say 5 times in a week to lobby to get yourself named MVP, don't expect a call from me asking for an impartial opinion.

4) The winner of the MVP will almost never, ever get one of the other two awards. The only way I could see it happening is if he played so much better than literally anyone else in the game. So it probably never will happen but I want to be on record as saying that it could, possibly, maybe, happen (on the vernal equinox) - so basically if Jeremy comes out and the rest of us suck that week : )

5) Punting will generally be considered "defensive" in nature because it is intended to help set your defense up. Receiving punts will be considered "offensive" in nature because it provides an advantage in positioning the offense.

6) As I've mentioned in the past, I prefer the MVP to be given to a player who does well in more than just one phase of the game and now that we have 2 other awards, that focus on the main phases of the game, its important to try to make the MVP award go to someone who has a broad impact. Having said that, there will be times when super performance on one side of the ball makes such a difference in the game that it deserves MVP.

More thoughts on MVP:

There have been a few comments on selecting the MVP and so I thought I'd respond to them and elevate the conversation to it's own thread.

I brought up the question about crediting play calling because I'm concerned about recognizing the the value-add that doesn't show up in stats. I certainly don't want to try giving credit for play calling on a per play basis. Generally the play calling is left up to the QB or Chenault (that's my experience anyway). Having said that, I certainly agree with the points raised bout about lots of people having input into plays. When Chenault is not on my team, I probably call my own route 70% of the time - the QB draws up routes for the other receivers and then I look at them and suggest a route that will complement (or at least not interfere) with them.

When you watch football, some of the greatest praise offered is that a player "elevates the play of those around him". Lots of players in our group have that effect at various times. Plays on Nick's team tend to have more yards per catch because he throws deep more (though that shows up in the stats). Mark's absorbing a double team so another lineman can get pressure or Chenault's drawing up good plays are other examples.

Here are some ideas to consider:

1) If there is no really big standout performance - don't give the award that week.

2) If I don't see a standout, let players decide via survey.

3) Have each team select a captain for the week who will assist me with MVP selection. The captain would ideally be someone who was there for the full game (another reason to be timely). This would also be helpful because though I have won the MVP award a couple times, I'm always harder on myself than other players because I don't want to take the risk of being biased.

I do like the idea of adding an offensive and defensive player of the week but if MVP is this big a pain in the ass in big games (which are all we're going to have for until Thanksgiving if history is any guide), adding 2 more awards may just add to the work.

Week 2 Game Summary CORRECTED:

So much for the hurricane and my handwringing. After Ike made a hard right after hitting the coast, we ended up with no rain and the wind was not even the worst we've played in. Certainly some balls sailed a bit but we've had games where you had to aim the ball 2-3 times the normal distance you'd lead a receiver because the cross wind would take it move it as far laterally as you threw it longitudinally.

We had another large game where we played 9 on 9 with substitutions - great turnout. Game started 7 on 7 for 1 series each because we only had 15 timely players and its only fair to play an even number of series at a given size game because 7 on 7 is very different than 9 on 9.

Our defensive leaders were Canadian with 2 picks and 2 defensed passes, Ray with 2 picks, and Barry with 3 defensed passes. As a unit, however, Red's defensive front 4 were stellar scoring 5 sacks/stops for losses and 5 QB pressures. Couple that with 3 picks (Paul also had 1) and 4 defensed passes and you have a very strong performance. Yellow's defense also put up numbers with 3 sacks/stops for losses, 4 QB Pressures, 2 picks and 8 defensed passes.

Punting is becoming a more interesting part of the game. We had 6 in this game (3 by each team) for a total of 184 yards (averaging just under 31 yards per punt).

MVP: This is ultra hard this week. Big games usually are harder because there are more players per square yard of field which typically leads to fewer opportunities for a player to stand out - particularly when a QB can run and there are 4 receivers and 4 lineman. I often struggle to select the award winner but much more in these large games. Ultimately, I may have to start doing offensive and defensive players of the game and then an MVP. For MVP, I typically try to pick a player who had a big impact on both offense and defense. Sometimes, I give it to a player with an unballanced performance if it is dominating and a difference-maker in the game. I'm going to hold off on the award this week in order to seek comments in the Blog about the process and see if they will help me this week.

Here is one of the problems I have that I'd like feedback on - how to weigh offensive/defensive coordinator contributions fairly. I have no doubt that Chenaut's play calling has made a difference in week 1 and week 2. Indeed, I try to play on his team because he makes me a better player (anyone remember me rushing the QB before late last spring?). At the same time, I only know about his contributions because I was on his team and see them first hand. How do I credit that kind of valuable input on the other team when I can't see it?

The other player I'm considering for the award this week, is Mark who had a nice game on both offense and defense. However, I hesitate a bit here. Mark had one monster drive where he got almost every ball and made great plays. However, I know the impact he has on defense because, I personally often benefit from hit. He's a much more feared rusher than I am for good reason (fast and much stronger) and so people have to dedicate more resources to him. Having said that, it's hard for me to observe his impact sometimes if I'm not rushing with him. How often am I missing a similar impact by another player on the other team?

I take this seriously and would appreciate your comments and help.
