Week 19 Game Summary - Had problems with the recorder because I couldn't read the control lights in the sunlight but think I have an answer for next week. This week's game summary was by memory so here it is:

Another giant game - too many players for one game, but not enough to split into 2 games. The hallmark of the game was interceptions. I'm pretty sure that there were 8-10 picks - like 4-5 per side. As you can imagine this meant a low scoring affair and the final score was 2-1.

MVP was Louis who had 3 of the picks and I believe 2 of them were when Red was in scoring position and moving the ball well.

We also had a new guy show up - Rodney. Turns out that if you enter "AustinFlagFootball" in Google, this blog pops up at the top of the list so he found us that way. Rodney indicated that he had 3 other teams he was part of and suggested bringing them out sometime. We could have 2 games going for 90 minutes and the winners play each other like a little tournament. We'll see what comes of it. Could be fun. What I don't want to happen at this time, however is that we end up with another 6 semi-regular guys. 10 on 10 games are already too big so I'd prefer to keep the guys we have for a while and only add new ones as we loose regular attendance due to injury, interest, or other commitments.

Week 20 Preview: Superbowl weekend. Nothing better than a weekend that starts by playing a great game and ends by watching a great game. That was certainly the case 2 weeks ago when 9 of us braved the cold for a really fun game and then Sunday night had the Patriots & Colts playing one for the ages (at least the second half was). Hopefully this weekend will be similar (though I'd rather get 16 guys or so rather than 9).

Week 18 Summary: Thankfully all the excitement this week was on the football field (and then on the TV Sunday night – I hope no one missed that Colts game)

It was a little bit of old school action this week. We only had 9 players show up and had to play 5 on 4 with an all time defender (rotated between Matt, Louis, and Adam). Understand that we had 13 yeses and 2 maybes. We also had 2 guys who were not on the Evite show up. So of the original 13, possibly 15 guys only 7 showed up.

We still had a lot of fun. I really wish Brian could have made it though. Brian was the QB King of the 5 on 5 games. Great play calls and a nifty misdirection H-back play were his forte.

On to the game:

Red: Cain, Matt, Mike, Louis, Adam

Yellow: Ray, Donnie, Casey, Erik

Yellow

1-15 from the 10: Pass by Erik to Ray - incomplete. Batted down at the line of scrimmage by Matt.

2-15 from the 10: Pass by Erik to Donnie - incomplete. Matt blitzes and Erik throws across his body into the ground near Donnie.

3-15 from the 10: Pass by Erik to Ray - incomplete. Thrown into the ground.

4-15 from the 10: Punt

Red

1-20 from the 30: Pass by Cain to Mike for 13 yards - stopped by Ray. Little 3 yard slant route with some YAC.

2-7 from the 32: 3 man blitz by Casey, Donnie and Adam (which left one receiver uncovered). Casey caused a fumble by Cain good for a 5 yard loss.

3-12 from the 37: Pass by Cain to Mike - incomplete. Long fly route with Donnie and Ray on the coverage.

4-12 from the 37: Punt

Yellow

1-20 from the 5: Pass by Erik to Donnie for 10 yards - stopped by Louis. Little dump off pass Donnie who fights out of Adam's grasp and gets some YAC.

2-10 from the 15: Pass by Erik to Casey for 10 yards - stopped by Adam.

1-25 from the 25: Pass by Erik to Ray for 15 yards - stopped by Cain. Ray make a nice leaping catch to bring in a high throw on a 15 yard out route.

2-10 from the 35: Pass by Erik to Casey for 12 yards - stopped by Louis. 10 yard slant in route.

1-Goal from the 23: Wounded Duck thrown into the endzone to Ray but picked by Cain in the right corner of the endzone. He runs diagonally to the 25 and then runs diagonally towards the other 25 getting to the 26 yard line before begin stopped by Erik.

Red

1-1 from the 26: Long pass by Cain to Louis in the endzone - TD. 1-0, Red

Yellow

1-15 from the 10: Pass by Ray to Casey for 2 yards - stopped by Mike.

2-13 from the 12: Ball thrown low and behind Erik. Louis makes a nice pick at about mid-shin level and runs it back a couple yards before Ray makes the stop.

Red

1-15 from the 10: Adam and Casey blitz but Matt runs a nice 10 yard cross from the TE slot and is tracking the direction Cain is rolling so its an easy TD by Matt. 2-0, Red

Yellow

1-15 from the 10: Pass by Ray to Donnie - incomplete. Overthrown 10 yard cross.

2-15 from the 10: Pass by Ray to Casey - incomplete. Mike probably should have had the interception on this one. He definitely did a good job defensing the pass.

3-15 from the 10: Pass by Ray to Donnie - incomplete. Long throw of about 40 yards but Donnie ran more of a fly and the ball was thrown more like a deep seam.

4-15 from the 10: Punt

Red

1-20 from the 30: Run by Cain for -15 yards - stopped by Casey. The primary receiver slipped making his cut and Casey was there right when Cain was pulling it down and looking for another receiver.

2-10 from the 15: Pass by Cain to Mike - incomplete. Ball thrown a little short on a fly route. Donnie couldn't come up with the interception but he did prevent Mike from making the catch.

3-10 from the 15: Pass by Cain to Mike - incomplete. Ball was a little underthrown and under drier conditions, its likely Ray would have picked it but he did at least prevent Mike from getting it.

4-10 from the 15: Punt

Yellow

1-8 from the 17: Pass by Ray to Erik for 18 yards - stopped by Louis. Very nice throw - low and outside where only Erik could get it.

1-15 from the 35: Pass by Ray to Casey - incomplete. Good throw on an 8 yard out route - dropped.

2-15 from the 35: Hellava throw by Ray to Donnie who made a diving catch right on the goal line for a TD. 2-1, Red.

Red

1-15 from the 10: Pass by Cain to Louis for 16 yards - stopped by Erik.

1-24 from the 26: Pass by Cain to Louis - incomplete. Erik had very nice tight coverage on a fly route so neither he nor Louis came down with the ball.

2-24 from the 26: Pass by Cain to Mike - incomplete. Overthrown.

3-24 from the 26: Hook and Ladder play gone awry. The initial throw by Cain is complete to Matt for about 13 yards. At this point things go bad. Ray and Adam recognize the play and are standing about 5 yards behind Matt. Rather than go hard after Matt, they close they the coverge tighter waiting for the pitch. Meanwhile, Louis is coming across with Erik tight on him. Matt makes the pitch and Erik slaps it down. So the play is good for a net of 10 yards.

4-14 from the 36: Punt

Yellow

1-20 from the 5: Pass by Erik to Ray - incomplete. Play looked like it might have been a hook and ladder run from a WR Twins set but they wouldn't admit to it. Ray ran from the outside in for a quick pass and Casey was running an out right under him. If Ray had caught the ball Casey would have been in a perfect position for the pitch.

2-20 from the 5: Pass by Erik to Donnie for 12 yards - stopped by Adam. Very nice throw. Adam should have come over the top to try to tip or take it.

3-8 from the 17: Pass by Erik to Donnie - incomplete. Donnie ran an out just past the cone but the ball was thrown too low and he couldn't come up with it despite diving.

4-8 from the 17: Punt

Red

1-2 from the 23: 2 man blitz and Cain throws it away.

2-2 from the 23: Pass by Cain to Adam - incomplete. Fly route underthrown.

3-2 from the 23: Unknown.

4-2 from the 23: Pass by Cain to Adam - incomplete. Adam ran a 2 yard drag route and Cain tried to pitch the ball forward and it slipped and fell short behind the line of scrimmage.

Yellow

1-Goal from the 23: Cain intercepted the ball at the goal line and runs it back about 23 yards. He then pitches it to Louis who runs it down to the 3 yard line where Erik made the stop.

Red

1-Goal from the 3: Pass by Cain to Adam - incomplete. Blown play. Adam comes out of the backfield uncovered when they blitz. Adam calls for the ball but it is thrown out the back of the endzone.

2-Goal from the 3: Pass by Cain to Adam for 3 yards - stopped by . Cain throws while falling down. Adam takes it in for the short TD. 3-1, Red

Yellow

1-15 from the 10: Pass by Erik to Ray for 50 yards - stopped by Louis. 10 Yard cross and Ray gets a ton of YAC.

1-Goal from the 15: Pass by Erik to Donnie - incomplete. Ball thrown wide and high.

2-Goal from the 15: Pass by Erik to Casey for 11 yards - stopped by Mike.

3-Goal from the 4: TD Pass by Erik to Ray. 3-2, Red

Red

1-15 from the 10: Pass by Cain to Louis - incomplete. Blitz by Casey. Cain throws low to Louis on a 10 yard out.

2-15 from the 10: Pass by Cain to Adam for 16 yards - stopped by Matt Day. Blown play. Adam comes out of the backfield to the left. Cain rolls left throws very low and just shy of the first down. Adam makes the catch from his knees and pops across the first down marker just before Matt grabs him and starts spinning him down.

1-24 from the 26: Pass by Cain to Louis - incomplete. 10 yard cross thrown a little behind.

2-24 from the 26: Pass by Cain to Adam for 13 yards - stopped by Matt Day. Blown play. Adam comes out of the backfield and catches the ball for 13.

3-11 from the 36: Pass by Cain to Louis for 23 yards - stopped by Ray. Casey blitzes, Adam blocks, Cain rolls left and throws to Louis. Louis makes one guy miss and picks up some nice yards.

1-Goal from the 13: Pass by Cain to Mike - incomplete. Rushed 2 and Cain makes tough throw that would have been a very tough catch.

2-Goal from the 13: Run by Adam for 0 yards - stopped by Donnie. The only running play of the day. Delayed pitch to Adam on the left who was fighting through Matt and Casey with help from Cain when Donnie comes flying in from the other side of the field to make the flag. Cain is incredulous wondering where he came from. Adam points out that he told them in the huddle that it had to be a fast play or else Donnie would get there from the back side.

3-Goal from the 13: Pass by Cain to Louis - incomplete. Blown play. Louis got open at the back of the endzone but the ball was just a bit long and he couldn't make the catch.

4-Goal from the 13: Pass by Cain to Louis - incomplete. Drop by Louis (his description).

Yellow

1-12 from the 13: Pass by Erik to Donnie for 9 yards - stopped by Adam. Slant route from the slot.

2-3 from the 22: Pass by Erik to Donnie - incomplete. Adam got the barest tip of a finger on the ball and either it made a difference in the ball's tradjectory or Donnie just dropped it (not clear which it was)

3-3 from the 22: Pass by Erik to Donnie for 5 yards - stopped by Adam.

1-23 from the 27: Pass by Erik to Casey for 12 yards - stopped by Louis.

2-11 from the 36: Pass by Erik to Donnie - incomplete. Twins left. Outside receiver runs parallel to the line of scrimmage behind Casey who took one step forward, turned left, set his feet, put his hands up and picked Adam. But it wouldn't have matterd because the little forward pitch was dropped.

3-11 from the 36: Pass by Erik to Casey - incomplete. Casey was on a 11 yard crossing route when Matt gets in front of him to slap the ball down.

4-11 from the 36: Punt

Red

1-15 from the 10: Pass by Cain to Matt Day - incomplete. 10 yard WR cross pattern - dropped by Matt (again his discription - gotta love the honesty in this game).

2-15 from the 10: Pass by Cain to Adam for 15 yards - stopped by the sideline. Blown play. Adam floats out the backfield to the left and then cuts right on a deep slant. Cain throws the ball behind Adam who brings it in one handed and tip-toes just past the cone for a first down and calls it perhaps the best catch he's ever made (shortlived though).

1-25 from the 25: Pass by Cain to Adam for 18 yards - stopped by Louis. 2 man blitz. Adam again floats left and cuts right. Cain again throws behind but also a bit low but Adam makes what is now definitely the catch of his career - bringing it in one handed from behind again and running downfield backwards and spinning - makes Ray miss, stiff-arms Erik and again dances away backwards - then uses a block by Matt to get up the field for a 18 yard gain before finally giving himself up when Louis grabbed ahold of him and was bringing to the turf. Yes, I'm proud of that play and I think I should be. Don't worry, I get humble here in a minute.

2-7 from the 32: Pass by Cain to Matt Day for 15 yards - stopped by Erik.

1-Goal from the 17: Pass by Cain to Matt Day - incomplete. Ball thrown into the endzone and on a day with a dry ball, Donnie would have picked it.

2-Goal from the 17: Casey chased Cain all over and finally Cain stepped over the line of scrimmage which we called a 0 yard sack.

3-Goal from the 17: Pass by Cain to Away - incomplete. Defense brought 3 but had one peal off to cover Adam out of the backfield and Cain threw it away.

4-Goal from the 17: Pass by Cain to Adam - incomplete. Ball overthrown to Matt in the front of the endzone but perfectly thrown for Adam in the back of the endzone. Adam dropped it (see, humbleness returns).

Yellow

1-8 from the 17: Pass by Erik to Ray - incomplete. WR cross at the 1st down cone.

2-8 from the 17: End around to Donnie was supposed to be thrown back to Erik the but exchange was fumbled so it was a 6 yard loss.

3-14 from the 11: Pass by Erik to Donnie - incomplete. Pass defensed by Adam.

4-14 from the 11: Punt

Red

1-19 from the 31: Flea flicker to Louis and back to Cain. Casey made a 6 yard sack.

2-25 from the 25: Pass by Cain to Mike - incomplete. 12 Yard out route thrown short incomplete.

3-25 from the 25: Pass by Cain to Louis - incomplete. Underthrown

4-25 from the 25: Punt

Yellow

1-7 from the 18: Pass by Ray to Erik for 10 yards - stopped by Louis.

1-22 from the 28: Pass by Ray to Casey - incomplete. Little crossing route pass dropped.

2-22 from the 28: Pass by Ray to Casey - incomplete. Ball thrown a little wide and Matt makes a play for the ball but can't come up with it.

3-22 from the 28: Pass by Ray to Erik for 16 yards - stopped by the sideline.

4-6 from the 31: Pass by Ray to Unknown - incomplete. Missed the details on this one.

Red

1-6 from the 31: Pass by Cain to Unknown for yards - stopped by . Ball was intercepted by Casey and in the confusion, Donnie and Adam blocked each other.

1-9 from the 34: Pass by Ray to Unknown - incomplete. Didn't get the details

2-9 from the 34: Pass by Ray to Donnie - incomplete. Thrown a little wide

3-9 from the 34: Pass by Ray to Donnie - incomplete. Twins left. Outside receiver runs parallel to the line of scrimmage behind Casey who took one step forward, turned left, set his feet, put his hands up and picked Adam. But it wouldn't have mattered because the little forward pitch was dropped.

4-9 from the 34: Pass by Ray to Unknown - incomplete. Very good coverage results in a desperation thrown.

Red

1-16 from the 34: Pass by Cain to Adam - incomplete. Broken play. Ball underthrown to Adam who has to reach over Donnie to prevent the pick.

2-16 from the 34: Pass by Cain to Louis - incomplete. 10 Yard cross thrown a bit low but dropped.

3-16 from the 34: Pass by Cain to Adam - incomplete. 2 Man blitz. Cain dumps it off to Adam coming out of the backfield. Makes Ray miss and then makes Erik miss. Then Erik grabs Adam and Adam drags him down the field down to the 10.

1-Goal from the 10: Casey blitzed and Adam screwed up the block not knowing where Cain was so Casey was able to force a fumble for an 8 yard loss.

2-Goal from the 18: Pass by Cain to Adam - incomplete. Good coverage by secondary allows defense to bring two. Adam breaks off and goes in the opposite direction that Cain did so that Cain's throw can't reach him.

3-Goal from the 18: Pass by Cain to Louis - incomplete. Adam came in motion on set to the left WR spot. WR Cross with Louis and Adam - Louis going out underneath. Pass to back of the endzone.

4-Goal from the 18: Pass by Cain to Adam - incomplete. Z route to Adam underthrown.

Yellow

1-7 from the 18: Pass by Ray to Donnie - incomplete. Out and up route to Donnie overthrown.

2-7 from the 18: Pass by Ray to Erik - incomplete. Overthrown way down the field under pressure from a blitz.

3-7 from the 18: Pass by Ray to Donnie - incomplete. Ball thrown high on a slant.

4-7 from the 18: Pass by Ray to Erik for 11 yards - stopped by Louis. Underneath route.

1-21 from the 29: Pass by Ray to Donnie - incomplete. Broken play with a nice gain

1-Goal from the 24: Pass by Ray to Erik - incomplete. Another broken play. Thrown on a little underneath dump but the defenders were in the wrong positions and Erik is able to make a couple of nice moves to score. 3-3 Tie.

I should note that this last series was played in hurry-up fashion because Cain needed to leave so we ended without an even number of series.

MVP: If I had caught that second TD in the back of the endzone, I would have been tempted to give it to me this week. Between those career catches I had, the number of yards and the way I got them, I was thought I had a very nice game. But, I can’t look past that drop – especially since I got my hands on it.

Of course, even it that catch, I would have only been tempted because Casey had a monster day rushing the passer. I credited him with 5 sacks because it was his pressure that caused Cain to fumble twice and step across the line once. Plus, Casey had a pick and nice run back (despite no help from Adam and Donnie who blocked each other instead of guys on the other team). So Casey gets the award this week.

Week 19 Preview: I’m a little concerned we may be looking for a new field for a while. We were playing on the freshman field when the Lacrosse coach asked us to play on one of the regular fields. So we ended up tearing up 2 fields (I can only imagine how bad the fields would have looked if we’d gotten 14-16 guys like we should have had). Hopefully no one will say anything because I LOVE playing at McNeil. 3 fields plus bathrooms make it the best location we’ve had in 13 years and we’ve played at 7 different locations over the years.

Week 17 Summary: I'm not really sure what happened with the game this week but what I suspect is that everyone woke up and heard the rain pouring down, looked out the window, looked at color-weather radar and saw that there was this big blob of "yellow" sitting right on top of Austin and not moving and said to themselves "Fuck that" and went back to bed. At least that's what I'm hoping happened because I had an emergency and couldn't go to the game (which meant that the gear didn't go to the game either).

My apologies if enough people did show up and want to play (though I would guess the fields were a nightmare after all that rain). I really feel bad I couldn't make it but I was rather distracted.

I woke up around 6:00 listening to the rain and concerned that we were not going to get much turnout. So after a while I got up and sat down at the computer to see whether the rain was going to stop by 9:00 or shortly thereafter. While sitting at my computer studying the weather patterns, I noticed out of the corner that one of my cats behaving oddly. She was stalking a doormat from my back door that had started floating at her. "Oh, isn't that cute," I thought, "Kittens can be so much fun." At the same time I thought, "Why would a heavy, rubber doormat be floating in the house?" It was then that I realized that I more than half our media room was under nearly an inch of water.

I sprang up and ran to the flooded part of the room to grab the X-Box 360 that was in about 3/4" of water and plugged in. So standing barefoot in water on a tile floor, I'm trying to disconnect the X-Box to prevent it from getting damaged and then realizing that I really needed to unplug it to keep from getting electrocuted. Having accomplished that, I realized I was still about to die because I installed extra plugs in the floor of the room using conduit and the water had now reached one of them. I pulled the plug on the extensions and, as a precaution, began pulling all other plugs to prevent our audio/video equipment from blowing up.

I then sent a message to the Flag Football players and called my wife who had not gotten off her night shift yet and left her a message telling her that I needed her home at that point. Actually, I got voicemail and just said "I need you home now" and hung up. This, I later found out, was not the type of message that has enough detail for Amanda. Not knowing what the problem was and imagining that I was injured (which given the exposure to electricity while standing in water was a distinct possibility), she was about to turn the hospital pharmacy over to the house supervisor (who is not a pharmacist). Fortunately, she got a hold of me and I was able to explain that I wasn't injured but that I needed her to come home and bring pumps.

I then went outside and discovered that our primary drainage systems were clogged and there was about 6 inches of standing water that had risen far enough to drain into the house. So it was dark, cold, raining hard, and there was quite a bit of lightning and I, I had to get on a metal ladder to clean out the gutters to try to help water drain away from the part of the house where it was flooding in. This was after I was on my hands and knees in the water clearing out the ground drain and pouring bags of concrete all against the wall where the water was coming in.

Unfortunately, this actually made it worse because the water kept rising and ended flooding an exterior closet on with a common wall to the media room and that then drained into the room across a larger line. The entire yard was under about 4 inches of water and not really draining well. The high water mark in the media room was about 2 inches and 2/3rds of the floor under water (the room is 16x24 and slopes slightly).

Amanda and I then spent the rest of the day working with the water removal guys, I spent most of it outdoors digging a trench from one side of the property to the other which allows the water to drain while Amanda packed up everything in the media room to clean it out. Sunday, we figured out how the water got in that exterior closet and fixed that by cutting 4 inches off the bottom of the door and building up the retaining wall . The builders had put in a pretty good wall there but notched it lower for the door - idiots.

We think the property damage is limited to a couple bookshelves and an area rug. Not sure what the house damage is but we'll definitely be spending quite a bit on improving lot drainage and adding better retaining walls (perhaps disguised as planters). Still, its better than our original idea of tearing the back half of the house off, pouring a higher slab for the media room and rebuilding on top of that.

MVP: Dumb luck which had my back and kept me from getting electrocuted during the many, many opportunities I had.

Week 18 Preview: Sadly, it looks like more rain but probably nothing like we had Saturday morning where we got 5 inches in about 3 hours.

Week 16 Game Summary: I got a new toy this week - a voice recording watch. It worked much, much better than the little recorder I was carrying around the first few weeks. Still had a couple problems at first but I think this will do the trick nicely.

Yellow: Nick, Chenault, Mark N, Casey, Paul, Matt Day, Zieser, Louis, Corey, & Dave
Red: Cain, Erik, Chris, Kyler, Josh, Rich, Adam, Ty, Eric, Brandon, Mike, & Barry

Yellow Drive 1
1-15 from the 10: Pass by Nick to Mark N for 7 yards - stopped by Adam.
2-8 from the 17: Pass by Nick to Louis - incomplete. Pump and go play. The ball was nearly intercepted by Mike.
3-8 from the 17: Run by Nick for 26 yards - stopped by Adam. Apparently Nick's knee is really healed because he broke tackles for a big gain.

1-7 from the 32: Pass by Nick to Mark N - incomplete. Play action pass play with a fake to Louis. Ball overthrown and there was good coverage by Mike.
2-7 from the 32: Fake pass handed off beautifully to Louis who ran for 5 yards Stopped by Adam.
3-2 from the 27: Pass by Nick to Unknown for 2 yards - stopped by Unknown. Didn't get the details on this play due to screwing up the recording.

1-Goal from the 25: Pass by Nick to Unknown - incomplete. Didn't get the details on this play due to screwing up the recording.
2-Goal from the 25: Pass by Nick to Unknown for 11 yards - stopped by Unknown. Didn't get the details on this play due to screwing up the recording.
3-Goal from the 14: Pass by Nick to Unknown for 11 yards - stopped by Unknown. Didn't get the details on this play due to screwing up the recording.
4-Goal from the 3: Pass by Nick to Unknown - incomplete. Didn't get the details on this play due to screwing up the recording.

Red Drive 1
1-22 from the 3: Pass by Cain to Ty - incomplete. Short crossing route underneath would have been good for about 4 yards.
2-22 from the 3: Run by Cain for 6 yards - stopped by Matt.
3-16 from the 9: Pass by Cain to Chris for 53 yards - stopped by Paul. Big play with some broken tackles. Coverage was good but Chris made a very nice catch.

1-Goal from the 13: Cain under pressure scrambles and throws out the back of the endzone.
2-Goal from the 13: Cain under pressure scrambles left and throws back right. Zieser makes a very nice one handed grab intercepting the ball. Chris makes the stop for a touchback.

Yellow Drive 2

1-15 from the 10: Option run by Nick pitching to Paul who is forced out of bounds for no gain.
2-15 from the 10: Nick rolls right and throws left to Paul. Ball is intercepted by Kyler who takes it in for a TD.

1-0, Red

Yellow Drive 3

1-15 from the 10: Pass by Nick to Paul - incomplete. Ball was thrown deep and overthrown.
2-15 from the 10: Pass by Nick to Dave - incomplete. RB floats right. QB fakes to RB and overthrows the receiver on a deep route.
3-15 from the 10: Pass by Nick to Paul - incomplete. 10 yard out route with tight coverage by Chris.
4-15 from the 10: Punt

Red Drive 3

1-25 from the 25: Pass by Cain to Kyler for 7 yards - stopped by Louis.
2-18 from the 32: Cain rolls left and throws it away.
3-18 from the 32: Run by Cain for 32 yards - stopped by Zieser. This was a hell of a run. At one point, Cain does a spin move between two defenders who are so close together that they are able to get hands on him. Zieser ends up making a great touchdown-saving flag grab while reaching around a block.

1-Goal from the 11: Pass by Cain to Mike - incomplete. Formation involved a stack of 2 WRs right inside the slot receiver. The defenders just played press coverage so that the WRs were all banged into each other.
2-Goal from the 11: Run by Cain for 6 yards - stopped by Paul.
3-Goal from the 5: Pass by Cain to Adam - incomplete. The play was "Juan's Option" where the QB runs one way with a RB behind him and the tight end from the other side dragging in the same direction. Zieser made a very nice two-handed defense of the pass.
4-Goal from the 5: Run by Cain for -19 yards - stopped by Chault. Big sack results in a turn over on downs.

Yellow Drive 4

1-1 from the 24: Pass by Nick to Louis - incomplete. Long pass down the left sideline to Louis but overthrown. The person who got closest to it was Zieser who flat out dove for it. Hell of an effort but no chance to make a catch.
2-1 from the 24: Run by Nick for 17 yards - stopped by Adam. Nick sent everybody long and then ran for the 1st down. Play was called dead after 17 yards for a stiff-arm to the middle of Adam's forearm.

1-9 from the 34: Pass by Nick to Paul - incomplete. Trips play with a little throw to Paul underneath but a bit high.
2-9 from the 34: Pass by Nick to Zieser - incomplete. Brandon tipped the ball to cause the incompletion.
3-9 from the 34: Pass by Nick to Paul - incomplete. Long pass down the right sideline into the endzone but Adam played low and stuck is hand up between Paul's right as the ball got there.
4-9 from the 34: Punt

Red Drive 4

1-15 from the 10: Run by Cain for 7 yards before being forced out.
2-8 from the 17: Pass by Cain to Eric - incomplete. Nearly a sack by Mark N but Cain was able to get it off. However, the throw was low.
3-8 from the 17: Pass by Cain to Cain - incomplete. Cain throwing under pressure throws way down the field. It comes awkwardly in and Ty bends way back trying to catch it and is unable to bring it in.
4-8 from the 17: Punt

Yellow Drive 4

1-2 from the 23: Run by Nick for 7 yards - stopped by Kyler.
1-20 from the 30: Pass by Nick to Dave - incomplete. 10 Yard cross from out wide thrown to the middle of the field. A beautiful thrown but not caught.

Yellow Drive 6

1-17 from the 8: Run by Nick for 0 yards - stopped by Chris.
2-17 from the 8: Pass by Nick to Paul - incomplete. Paul came out of the backfield and Nick dumped it to him on a little go route but it was dropped.
3-17 from the 8: Pass by Nick to Louis for 22 yards - stopped by Ty.

1-20 from the 30: Run by Paul for 12 yards - stopped by Ty. This should have been a dead play. Nick and Paul were on different pages as to the direction of the pitch but Nick was able to make it work. Then Paul took it up the field and made 3 people miss him before Ty made the stop and saved a touchdown. The hallmark of the play may have been Adam coming across the field to try to make the stop and running over Kyler (his own teamate who was on the defensive line) to try to make a play.
2-8 from the 33: Pass by Nick to Unknown - incomplete. Very nearly a sack by Ty - one of those "at the same time" kinds of things.
3-8 from the 33: Pass by Nick to Zieser - incomplete. Long throw into triple coverage (well it was triple coverage by the time the ball got there).
4-8 from the 33: Pass by Nick to Matt for 14 yards - stopped by Kyler. 10 yard crossing route that got a little YAC and a 1st down.

1-Goal from the 19: Nick threw it away under pressure.
2-Goal from the 19: Pass by Nick to Zieser - incomplete. Ball overthrown out the back of the endzone.
3-Goal from the 19: Pass by Nick to Paul - incomplete. Catchable but it went off his hands. Slightly off day by Paul who normally has some of the best hands in the game (read about his MVP performance a couple weeks ago).
4-Goal from the 19: Pass by Nick to Zieser for a TD. Adam released Zieser to the safety on a slant route but really shouldn't have since Zieser is bigger than the safety and was in front of him.

1-1

Red Drive 6

1-15 from the 10: Run by Cain for 9 yards - stopped by Paul.
2-6 from the 19: Pass by Cain to Adam - incomplete. Adam released left out of the backfield and then crossed at about 5. The ball was well thrown, nice and high and would have been caught but Louis ran through Adam preventing a catch.
3-6 from the 19: Pass by Cain to Unknown - incomplete.
4-6 from the 19: Punt

Yellow Drive 7

1-1 from the 24: Pass by Nick to Mark N for 11 yards - stopped by Unknown.

2-20 from the 5: Pass by Cain to Brandon - incomplete.
3-20 from the 5: Pass by Cain to Brandon for 40 yards - stopped by touched down. Big throw and catch.

1-5 from the 30: Pass by Cain to Ty - incomplete.
2-5 from the 30: Pass by Cain to Brandon - incomplete. Under pressure, Cain throws into the endzone for Brandon but it was a little short.
3-5 from the 30: Run by Cain for -11 yards. Sacked by Mark N.

2-20 from the 5: Pass by Nick to Zieser for 0 yards - stopped by Barry.
3-20 from the 5: Pass by Nick to Louis - incomplete. Long throw along the sideline but would have required a miracle catch.
4-20 from the 5: Punt

Red Drive 8

1-20 from the 30: Run by Cain for 7 yards - stopped by Matt. A nice little run that included a jumping spin move over Nick at the line of scrimmage.
2-13 from the 37: Pass by Cain to Josh for 6 yards - stopped by Matt. 5 yard cross route from the left TE slot. Ball thrown near the sideline and Josh was able to turn it upfield 2 yards.
3-7 from the 32: Beautiful diving one-handed catch by Chris who rolled out of bounds after the catch.

1-Goal from the 22: Pass by Cain to Rich - incomplete. Cain was under pressure by Zieser and threw a wobbly duck that Louis was zeroing in on for a pick. Fortunately, Rich was able to defense the pass and prevent the interception.
2-Goal from the 22: Run by Cain for 1 yards - stopped by Zieser.
3-Goal from the 21: Under pressure, Cain throws blind to a part of the field were apparently there was supposed to be a Red receiver. There was none there and so the ball went straight to Nick in the endzone. He runs to the 20 and then pitches it to Louis who runs another 20 yards before Chris and Ty stop him.

Yellow Drive 9

1-10 from the 40: Run by Unknown for 3 yards - stopped by Unknown.
2-13 from the 37: Huge sack by Ty for an 11 yard loss.
3-24 from the 26: Pass by Nick to Chenault for 10 yards - stopped by Kyler. The play was initially supposed to be an option run with Chenault to the left but coverage was good so Nick kept it and scrambled right with 3 members of his line in front of him. Adam crashed the line pushing blockers back towards Nick who threw the ball up for Chenault who had run a short cross to try to get into the play to block or to be an underneath dump off.
4-14 from the 36: Punt

Red Drive 9

1-20 from the 5: Run by Cain for 21 yards - stopped by Zieser.

1-24 from the 26: Pass by Cain to Brandon for 10 yards - stopped by Louis.
2-14 from the 36: Pass by Cain to Brandon - incomplete. Paul came in to slap this ball away.
3-14 from the 36: Pass by Cain to Unknown - incomplete. Casey got Cain's arm as he was throwing the ball yet it still traveled about 25 yards down the field. Fortunately it was out of bounds because Louis would have picked it had it been a little closer to the sideline.
4-14 from the 36: Punt

Yellow Drive 10

1-20 from the 5: Pass by Nick to Zieser - incomplete. Thown long
2-20 from the 5: Pass by Nick to Zieser - incomplete. 7 yard cross thrown high.
3-20 from the 5: Pass by Nick to Matt - incomplete. Out route to Matt but it would have been short of the first and Barry played very nice defense and knocked it out of Matt's hands.
4-20 from the 5: Punt

1-15 from the 35: Pass by Cain to Barry - incomplete. Ball thrown low.
2-15 from the 35: Ball intercepted by Louis who was forced out of bounds by Brandon.

4-9 from the 16: Run by Erik for 4 yards - stopped by Paul.

2-Goal from the 24: Pass by Nick to Matt - incomplete. Thown to Matt in the endzone but it was a bad throw and so incomplete.
3-Goal from the 24: Pass by Nick to Paul for 22 yards - stopped by Cain. Little dumpoff pass to Paul who has a nice run and nearly scores.
4-Goal from the 2: Josh intercepted the ball and Nick got the stop.

Red Drive 15

1-1 from the 26: Pass by Erik to Barry - incomplete. 7 yard out route.

3-1 from the 26: Run by Erik for 11 yards - stopped by Paul.

1-Goal from the 15: 5 Yard out to Adam who caught the ball just after Dave pulled the flag so he was able to run in for the TD.

4-2, Yellow

Yellow Drive 16

1-15 from the 10: Pass by Nick to Paul - incomplete. Matt was essentially uncovered for the first few seconds of the play but fortunately for Red the ball was thrown to Paul who was covered well by Erik. Both went up for the ball but it was incomplete.
2-15 from the 10: Run by Mark N for -9 yards - stopped by Adam. Adam came on a corner blitz and Mark slipped on the hand off so he was touched down.
3-24 from the 1: Pass by Nick to Paul for 15 yards - stopped by Erik.
4-9 from the 16: Pass by Nick to Unknown - incomplete. Ty tipped this one to prevent a completion.

Red Drive 16

3-Goal from the 7: Pass by Erik to Kyler for 5 yards - stopped by Louis.
4-Goal from the 2: Pass by Erik to Barry - incomplete. This was supposed to be a QB run but for some reason Erik hiked the ball before his line was set. He rolled right and backwards with Zieser in his face and threw blind to Barry but it was uncatchable.

Game over 4-1, Yellow

Yellow made the case that their Defense should get the MPV this week. It was a good performance but I need to see the stats first.

Week 17 Preview: Well the holidays are over and we're getting good turn out again. So I'd ask everyone to hold off on inviting additional players for a couple weeks until we see where we end up in terms of attendance. I think most people would rather not have games of more than 18 because people spend more than half their time on the offensive line. People who have been playing with us are welcome to keep coming out and its likely that we'll want to get a few new players later this year if we lose some folks due to conflicts, moving away, or (hopefully not) injuries. So keep people in mind.

However, if we could find some more good, dependable quarterbacks, we could run 2 games of 6 on 6 for 90 minutes and then switch the opponents with the winning teams playing each other for the next 90 minutes (and the other two teams playing each other too). I think a mini-tournament would be cool but we need QBs to make it work.

Week 15 Game Summary: Once again, close but no cigar. The voice recorder died about 40 minutes before the end of the game. At the time I thought it was the battery. When I got home, I discovered that it was broken. Fortunately, I was able to take it apart, clean it up and get it working again. So we didn't lose this week's info (other than the last 40 minutes I couldn't record while it was broken). Onto the game:

Red: Chris, Bennie, Matt Day, Adam, Chenault, David, Rich, Cain

Yellow: Erik, Patrick, Mark C, Paul, Brian Zieser, Joe, Casey

Game started as 6 on 6 as Bennie, David, and Joe did not arrive before the start. Extra player was on Red because Adam went into the game with a pulled hamstring that limited him to offensive line and line backer early and so the plan was to sub out a lot. Casey was playing with a pulled groin and quad and played a lot of line for yellow.

Red Drive 1 - Cain QB
1-15: 20 Yards up the field to Chris in double coverage and incomplete
2-15: 10 Yard crossing route to Rich thrown behind him incomplete.
3-15: Cain under pressure throws behind Chris incomplete
4-15: Punt

Yellow Drive 1 - Zieser QB

1-Goal from the 23: Crossing play to Paul over thrown and nearly picked by Matt coming out of the safety slot.
2-Goal: Ball thrown into ground to Mark running an out from crossing route with the the slot WR and TE.
3-Goal: 10 yard turnaround route thrown pretty well to Paul but defensed by Cain.
4-Goal: Post route to the middle of the field to Paul but Cain made the "Interception/Drop" play at the 1 where the defender grabs the ball out of the air and chooses to drop it prior to completing the act of the catch. This results in a take over on downs at the 23.

Red Drive 2 - Cain QB - Bennie subs in for Adam
1-2 from the 23: Broken play with Cain rolling left, throwing left underneath to Bennie but the ball was well defensed by Mark.
2-2: Another broken play with a throw to a 15 Yard cross for Bennie but well defensed by Erik who slapped the ball away.
3-2: Safety blitz by Paul. Cain throws the Chenault for 6 yards. Unknown flag.

1-21 from the 29: Broken play with Cain yelling "go deeper". Thrown deep to Rich in double coverage and despite 3 players all converging, none is able to put a finger on the ball which drops in the center of the collapsing triangle.
2-21: Broken play where Cain literally is running around for about 15 seconds and finally throws a catchable through not beautiful ball to Chenault who drops it.
3-21: Chris QBs and throws a ball that should have been picked by Paul but was dropped.
4-21: Punt.

Joe has arrived so the game goes up to 7 on 7 with Joe joining Yellow and Adam going back in on Red.

Yellow Drive 2 - Zieser QB

David subs in for Adam

Yellow Drive 3 - Zieser QB

2-Goal: Cain under pressure throws the ball away.
3-Goal: Intercepted by Erik who runs out the back of the end zone for a Safety.

This generated some controversy during the game so I went and got the rules on Safeties. A safety is "scored for the opposing team when the ball is dead on or behind a team’s own goal line if the impetus came from a player on that team." There are a few exceptions:

1) Player intercepts a pass with both feet inbounds in the field of play and his momentum carries him into his own end zone. Ball is put in play at spot of interception.

2) Player intercepts a pass in his own end zone and is downed in the end zone, even after recovering in the end zone. Impetus came from passing team, not from defense. (Touchback)

In this case, the interception was in the endzone by Erik. He then continued running away from Red players and looking back up the field. He then ran out the back of the endzone. It was not his momentum which carried him out of the endzone because he was running more or less parallel to the back of the endzone when he intercepted the ball. It was only as he began looking up field that he rounded his route enough to step out of the back. The only part of the call that I'm not happy with is the fact that we don't have lines at the back of the endzone and its hard for a player to know where the boundaries are. There have been many times where a player was running down the sideline and had plenty of room to run yet was called out because someone from a better vantage point could see that his foot stepped on the missing line. Had we had a line on those occasions (or this one) its not clear that a player would have stepped out.

We may want to discuss some kind of good faith ruling on these cases in the future.

4-1.5, Yellow

MVP: Based on a review of the stats, I think the honor this week goes to Erik. He and Zieser had the best games. Their QB stats were similar though Erik had a better completion rate and they both stopped 7 plays on defense. However, Zieser's seven stops were flags and 4 of Erik's stops were interceptions.

Week 16 Preview: Alright, we're past the holidays so I'm expecting a pretty big turn out. Please arrive on time because I'd be surprised if we had less than 9 on 9 and we'll need to get going fast if everyone is going to get a good chance to have some plays.
