Week 22 Game Summary:

Sad day when we only get 14 on Super Bowl weekend. Sadder still when we have 2 players have game ending injuries less than an hour into the game and we're stuck with a dinky 6 on 6 game. Having said that, but for the injuries it was one of the better games we've had this season:

1) No arguing - seriously, I don't think we had a single raised voice and we only called a few penalties (I only actually remember one PI and one flag guard and Anthony not only admitted it, he thought that it was legal).

2) A new QB option was found - Anthony had a great debut for a player who did not have real QB experience prior to playing in our game. While it's true he had 2 huge rushes, after 50 minutes he was not able to run anymore because the game dropped to 6 on 6 and he still came out with a over 40% completions and only one pick.

3) The game was tight and the team that was not expected to win was ahead most of the game. No offense to Anthony but when you have Street going against a rookie, you tend to think the rookie's team will have trouble - even more so when you consider that the 2 most experienced play callers (Street and Chenault) were on the same team.

I'm really sorry I wasn't able to finish the game, I was feeling really good and had a nice start on defense before the injury - plus standing on the sideline recording plays is really boring.

On to the play-by-play and stats:

R - Chenault, Day, Jesse, Josh, RChin, Street, & Treadaway
Y - Adam, Anthony, Barry, Carlos, Mario, Matta, & Ray

Game was 7 on 7 for about 50 minutes and then dropped to 6 on 6 when RChin and then Adam were injured.

1-13 from the 33: Pass by Street to Jesse - intercepted by Anthony who takes it in for the TD. Adam hurt his foot blocking on the return. 3 - 1, Yellow.

For those who are interested, here is what Adam's foot looked like at 10:30 Saturday night after the injury and playing kickball (don't laugh, I caught everything that was anywhere near me - we should get a football made of "kickball" material - and I "kicked" .750 and scored twice despite barely being able to run):

3-25 from the 35: Pass by Anthony to Barry - 18 yard gain - stopped by Street.
4-7 from the 27: Pass by Anthony to Barry - 15 yard gain - stopped by Street.

Passing Stats:
Players Comp Drops Attempts % Yards TDs INTs Sacked Yds Lost Rating
Anthony 18 1 44 40.91% 142 1 1 5 -27 47.73
Ray 1 0 6 16.67% 4 0 1 0 0 0.00
Street 25 2 59 42.37% 369 4 5 6 -51 50.74

Nice debut for the rookie: nearly 41% completion percentage and only 1 pick. He was sacked 5 times but only for 27 yards and far more often than not, he was able to use his legs to avoid pressure and make a throw. That may not have come through in the play-by-play but there were many plays where there was pressure and he always looked for a receiver. His two runs were actually called plays.

Receiving/Rushing Stats:
Players Recpts Targets Yards Rec TDs Rushes Yards Rush TDs Combined Blocks 1st Downs
Chenault 0 6 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0

Matta 1 5 31 0 0 0 0 31 0 1
Ray 7 11 47 1 0 0 0 47 0 2

3 Receivers with over 100 yards in a game. Jesse led with 149 yards on 8 catches which resulted in 6 first downs. Day was next with 127 yards on 8 catches for 2 TDs and 5 first downs. Then we had Josh with 107 yards on 5 catches good for a TD and 3 first downs. That's a lot of offense for 3 receivers in a game on the same team.

Defensive Stats:
Players Flags Passes Defensed INTs Strips Sacks/ Stops for Loss Pressures Safeties Def TDs
Chenault 5 0 0 0 4 1 0 0
Day 3.5 2 1 0 0 0 0 0

RChin 4 1 0 0 0 0 0 0

Mario 2.5 2 0 0 0 0 0 0
Matta 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 0
Ray 4 0 2 0 0 0 0 0

Anthony had the biggest day on defense with 3 picks (one a pick-six) and six other defensed passes. He also had 8 flags. I normally don't mention flags for the secondary because usually they are by people who gave up the catch. But from the sideline I saw that about 4 of his flags were on receivers he was not covering. Carlos and Chenault also had huge days with 4 sacks each and Chenault getting an additional pressure and Carlso getting 2. But many other players had big days. Day hada pick and 2 defensed passes. Josh, Mario, and Treadaway each defensed 2 passes. Street had a pick and a defensed pass. Ray had 2 picks. Even the wounded players were making plays before their injuries: RChin had a defensed pass and Adam had 2 sacks and a QB pressure (in 50 minutes! Imagine what they might have done in 3 hours).

Special Teams Stats:
Players Punts Punt Yards Punts Fielded
Anthony 2 42 0
RChin 0 0 1
Ray 1 41 0

Awards:
As you can tell from my glowing commentary, I think there were a lot of players who had really outstanding play that is deserving of recognition. That makes this week's awards much harder than usual. Sometimes during a game you get a sense of who is going to win the awards. Up until the end of this one, I was pretty sure I knew what the awards would be. With Yellow leading for most of the game, I figured it would be Anthony for MVP, Day for Offensive Player of the Game, and Carlos for Defensive Player of the Game.

When I got home the stats more or less backed that up except for one major problem: most people in this group think that the MVP should come from the winning team and I have been criticized in the past for picking an MVP from the losing team even when it was obvious that the player I chose had the dominant performance of the game on either team and the winning team had no standout player. And lets be honest, Anthony had a very good day on offense and was dominant on defense.

My other chief candidate for MVP this week after reviewing the stats was Day who really had a smoking day on offense making numerous clutch catches and also had a very nice day on defense and was on the winning team. Day has always been a solid player who is very valuable to his team but this week was really a breakout.

So, I'm going to take the chickenshit way out and award the MVP to both Anthony and Day. If they had had these performances in different games than each other (and had Anthony been on the winning team in the game) they each would have almost certainly won an MVP that week. Further, this game was tied at the end and then Yellow's leading receiver had to leave and was replaced by a cripple and only then, did they lose. They might have lost even if Ray had been available but subbing crippled Adam for even a tired Ray is not a great deal (not that I think there was ANY other way to have fairly done it) but had Adam not been able to play offensive line, the game would have ended in a tie.

So that leaves Offensive and Defensive Players of the Game. Jesse and Josh were the remaining contenders for Offensive Player of the Game abut I'm going to give the award to Josh who earned 18.2 fantasy points compared to 17.9 for Jesse. I built a fantasy point generator into my stats tool to help me with these types of decisions so I'm using it now. Carlos gets the Defensive Player of the Week award edging out Chenault based on an extra flag and extra QB pressure.

11 sacks in 1 day. Did you play 5 receivers and 1 lineman? We may need to devote 1 Saturday strictly to how to block.
