Season 14 Kick Off - UPDATED WITH CORRECTIONS

Okay last week was supposed to be a preseason game - short game, scrimmage rules, etc. But, not surprisingly, a real game broke out at the first snap and we just played on from there.

Couple new things to talk about. Chenault and I were talking about the need to improve running in the game and he suggested that we try 20 yard first downs rather than 25 as we've been using for the past 8 years or so. We did and runs generally were more valuable. A good run in our game has typically been about 6 yards. If you get that in a 25 yard zone, its less than 1/4th the distance you need. If you do it in a 20 yard zone, its nearly 1/3rd the distance - definitely makes running more attractive.

So here are some new Season 14 rules as they currently stand (we may need a tweak here or there):

1) Game has four 20 yard first down zones which increases the field length from 75 yards to 80 yards.

2) The ball starts on the 8 at the start of the game, after a touchdown, or after a safety (we started at the 10 on a 25 yard first down which is 40% of the zone length and 8 yards is 40% of a 20 yard zone length).

3) Punts will increase to 40 yards + or - 5. We didn't do this during week 1. We used 35 yards like before but my feeling is that since 35 yards was just under half of the old field, then we should use 40 yards now on a longer field.

Other changes:

1) Because begging has not improved timeliness, I'm hoping that public shamings will. At 9:00, I'm going to record the name of everyone who is there and ready to play. If we have 12 players, we start play. So show up at 8:45, put your gear on, stretch, and be ready at 9:00 - I get up before 7 so I can get the gear, ice, water, etc. to the field before 8:30, get the field set up, stretch, and get into gear to be ready to play. Last year there were about 6-8 people who regularly were there and ready to play by 9:00.

2) I'm using a second recorder to try to improve game stats. Last year it took me 3 hours or more to transcribe a game and I need to cut that down to less than 90 minutes. It may take me a little longer during the game to transcribe a play (have to activate the recorder after every play) but it will save a lot of time and I know that most of you enjoy the transcriptions and stats as much as I do so I want to continue doing it.

3) I'm working on a way to record all the stats for the season into a DB so I can record end of season stats - wins, losses, yards, etc. and we'll pick "pro bowl" players or the like at the end of the season. To do this, I'm assigning players unique names when their names are relatively common (i.e. when we have multiple people coming out with the same name). So Matt Day is Day, Jason Chenault is Chenault, Jason Brecht is Brecht, Tom Street is Street, etc.

Enough of my insanity, on with the transcription.

Week 1 Game Summary:

Timely players:
Adam, Chenault, David, Chi, Mike, Cain, Nick, Day, Josh, Street
Game started at 9:10 - not bad considering the earliest we started last year was probably 9:20. So lets improve on 9:10.

Yellow: Chi, Adam, Cain, Chenault, Ty, David, and Josh
Red: Mike, Brecht, Nic, Street, Jesse, Day, and Mark

Yellow Drive #1
1-12 from the 8: Pass by Nick to Day for 6 yards - stopped by David.
2-6 from the 14: Run by Street for 4 yards - stopped by David.
3-2 from the 18: Pass by Nick to Day for 48 yards - stopped by David.

1-Goal from the 14: Run by Mike for 3 yards - stopped by Ty.
2-Goal from the 11: Pass by Nick to Day for 8 yards - stopped by David.
3-Goal from the 3: Pass by Nick to Street for 3 yards and the TD. Amazing, diving, one-handed catch that should never have been made. Great way to start off a season.

1 - 0, Yellow.

Red Drive #1
1-12 from the 8: Pass by Cain to Adam - incomplete. Miscommunication.
2-12 from the 8: Pass by Cain to Josh - incomplete. Overthrown.
3-12 from the 8: Pass by Cain to Adam for 12 yards - stopped by going out of bounds. Nice tiptoes to make get past the first down marker.

1-20 from the 20: Run by Chi for 16 yards - stopped by Street. Good blocking
2-4 from the 36: Pass by Cain to Chi - incomplete. Good rush on Cain.
3-4 from the 36: Pass by Cain to Josh defensed by Street - incomplete.
4-4 from the 36: Pass by Cain to Adam defensed by Mike - incomplete. Turnover on downs

Yellow Drive #2
1-16 from the 36: Pass by Nick to Jesse for 11 yards - stopped by Ty.
2-5 from the 25: Sack of Nick by Chi for -9 yards.
3-14 from the 34: Pass by Nick to Jesse for 15 yards - stopped by Adam. Diving catch by Jesse.

1-Goal from the 19: Run by Mark for -1 yards - stopped by Josh. Mark runs right and has no where to go so he reverses field and Josh, who stayed home on his rush, gets the flag.
2-Goal from the 20: Pass by Nick to Jesse - incomplete. Jesse could only get one foot in the back of the endzone.
3-Goal from the 20: Pass by Nick to Jesse defensed and nearly picked by Ty.
4-Goal from the 20: Pass by Nick to Jesse - incomplete. Turnover on downs

Red Drive #2
1-1 from the 19: Run by Ty for -3 yards - stopped by Mark. Ty came behind the QB from the Slot on Hike to take the pitch on an end around sweep.
2-4 from the 16: Pass by Cain to Unknown intercepted by Street who ran it in for the TD.

2-0, Yellow.

Red Drive #3
1-4 from the 16: Pass by Cain to Chenault - dropped.
2-4 from the 16: Pass by Cain to Adam - dropped. Play action. Good pass, straight in but it slid up the forearms.
3-4 from the 16: Pass by Cain to Adam defensed by Street - incomplete. Fortunately not picked.
4-4 from the 16: Punt.

Yellow Drive #4
1-2 from the 38: Pass by Street to Mike defensed by Ty - incomplete. Broken play. Ball was a dump off.
2-2 from the 38: Pass by Street to Mike - incomplete. Ball overthrown.
3-2 from the 38: Pass by Street to Nick for 5 yards - stopped by Chi.

1-17 from the 37: Pass by Street to Nick - incomplete. Long route. Nick looked to one side and the ball was on the other and he lost a step trying to turn to the right side. Otherwise a nice pass.
2-17 from the 37: Pass by Nick to Day - incomplete. Street pitches to Nick who throws a deep pattern to Day. Was a nice throw but either on the wrong side or the receiver looked to the wrong side.
3-17 from the 37: Pass by Street to Day - incomplete. Ball a little wide.
4-17 from the 37: Punt.

Red Drive #4
1-15 from the 5: Pass by Cain to Ty - incomplete. Lot of pressure. Ball thrown short.
2-15 from the 5: Pass by Cain to Chenault - incomplete. Overthrown under pressure again.
3-15 from the 5: Sack of Cain by Unknown for -4 yards. Couldn't make out the name of the person who got this sack.
4-19 from the 1: Punt.

Yellow Drive #5
1-16 from the 36: Pass by Nick to Jesse for 36 yards and the TD.

3 - 0, Yellow.

Red Drive #5
1-12 from the 8: Run by Adam for 17 yards - stopped by Street. Very nice blocks opened a huge hole. If Adam's flag hadn't popped out, he might have had more.

1-15 from the 25: Run by Cain for -1 yards - stopped by Mark. Pitch to Adam, lousy pitch back to Cain. Cain rolls the other way looking for someone to pass to and then tucks to run but Mark gets the stop for a loss.
2-16 from the 24: Pass by Cain to Josh for 10 yards - stopped by Jesse.
3-6 from the 34: Pass by Cain to Adam - incomplete. Deep pass nicely thrown but Adam looked back a hair late and never saw it until it was literally 2 feet from his hands coming out of the sun and couldn't react to catch it.
4-6 from the 34: Pass by Cain to Josh - dropped. Turnover on downs.

Yellow Drive #6
1-14 from the 34: Pass by Nick to Jesse for 5 yards - stopped by Ty. Cain comes over from the Safety slot to make the play.
2-9 from the 29: Pass by Nick to Brecht defensed by Cain - incomplete.
3-9 from the 29: Pass by Nick to Mark defensed by David - incomplete. Should have been a catch but as Mark was gathering it in, David knocked it free. So Mark didn't have a chance to make a football move before losing the ball and it was an incomplete pass.
4-9 from the 29: Pass by Nick to Brecht defensed by Chi - incomplete. Very nice play by Chi. Turnover on downs.

Red Drive #6
1-11 from the 29: Run by Ty for 14 yards - stopped by Mike.
1-17 from the 37: Pass by Cain to Chenault - incomplete. Ball was high.
2-17 from the 37: Pass by Cain to David defensed by Jesse - incomplete. Should have been picked.
3-17 from the 37: Pass by Cain to Chenault for 0 yards - stopped by Pitch back to Adam that was dropped when Adam tried to run it in and the pitch was to the outside.. Cuba Libre.
4-17 from the 37: Punt.

Yellow Drive #7
1-7 from the 13: Run by Nick for yards - stopped by Adam. Pitch to Street. Pitch back to Nick who runs.
2-7 from the 13: Pass by Nick to Street for 17 yards - stopped by Adam.
1-10 from the 30: Pass by Nick to Day for 17 yards - stopped by Ty.
1-13 from the 33: Sack of Nick by Josh for -7 yards.
2-20 from the 40: Pass by Nick to for -9 yards - stopped by Chi.
3-9 from the 31: Pass by Nick to Street defensed by Chi - incomplete.
4-9 from the 31: Punt.

Red Drive #7
1-5 from the 15: Pass by Cain to Josh for 8 yards - stopped by Mike.
1-17 from the 23: Pass by Cain to Adam for 24 yards - stopped by Street. Stacked Play with Josh in front of Adam. Adam cuts out and gets the pass with Street all over him. Big struggle with stiff-arms and spins trying to get away. Tom finally makes an amazing flag while basically on the ground and saves what might have been a TD.

1-13 from the 33: Pass by Cain to Chi - incomplete.
2-13 from the 33: Pass by Cain to Chi intercepted by Jesse - stopped by Chi.

Yellow Drive #8
1-8 from the 28: Run by Mark for 7 yards - stopped by David. Fake pitch right and then Mark (coming from the Right TE spot to the left) gets the pitch going the other direction. David forces him out of bounds.
2-1 from the 21: Run by Mark for 7 yards - stopped by Ty. Option Play to the right with Jesse in and the right option and Mark as the left option.

1-Goal from the 14: Pass by Nick to Mark for yards - stopped by . Overthrown. The defender had a better shot at it.
2-Goal from the 14: Pass by Nick to Jesse for 9 yards - stopped by Chi.
3-Goal from the 5: Run by Jesse for 1 yards - stopped by Adam.
4-Goal from the 4: Pass by Nick to Mark defensed by David - incomplete. Turnover on downs.

Yellow Drive #9
1-Goal from the 3: Run by Mike for -1 yards - stopped by Chenault.
2-Goal from the 4: Run by Mike for 4 yards and the TD.

4 - 0, Yellow.

We ended unevenly (Red had 8 drives and Yellow had 9).

Nick had a very nice day with a 54.17% completion rate for 164 yards and 2 TDs. Cain didn't get any help from his receivers with 3 drops and a couple other incompletions that could were close to drops. Some of these would have been big plays.

Chi and David both had big days for Red with 5 flags and 2 defensed passes each and Chi also had a nice sack. Ty's 6 flags led all defenders today. He had 2 defensed passes too. Over on Yellow, the defenders didn't have as much of a chance to shine since Red couldn't get its offense going. Jesse had a couple big plays with a flag, an interception, and a defensed pass. Street's 3 flags, 2 defensed passes, 2 picks and a defensive touchdown was the best defensive performance of the day though I didn't get the name of the person who got a 4 yard sack on Cain.

Week 1 MVP - Originally, I thought I had a hard time selecting the MVP because based on the original stats, any really super standout performances. Just several solid week 1 games. Nick had a very nice performance (especially considering he didn't come out for any practice in the prior two weeks) but he didn't do anything stat-wise on defense. That may not be fair but its not like I have real game tape and can show the number of times Cain didn't pass to his receiver or how many times he tied up two linemen to allow another guy to get a sack. Nick had a very, very good game.

Jesse on the other hand, had a strong game offensively and defensively. He had the best game as a runner/receiver and arguably the second best as a defender for his team. But he was not on time.

Now here's where things change based on the updated stats. While Street did not have the most yards or catches (24 combined yards on 2 catches and one run), he was only thrown to 3 times and the one pass he did not catch was defensed by Chi which is generally more of a statement about the pass than the receiver. Then on defense, he had 3 flags, 2 defensed passes, 2 interceptions AND one of those returned for a TD. Street was the only player with TDs. AND . . . (wait for it) . . . he was on time.

From now on, if a player is late (particularly if he's very late), he can still win the MVP but it will be points off and so he'll have to kick ass all the more. A close race could be decided by timeliness so keep that in mind if you don't want to be at a disadvantage, get there on time.

So while I originally had Jesse down as MVP, I have reversed my opinion and award it to Street - that extra pick and TD were a big deal. My apologies that my recording problems delayed the awarding of this honor.
