Week 16 Game Summary: I got a new toy this week - a voice recording watch. It worked much, much better than the little recorder I was carrying around the first few weeks. Still had a couple problems at first but I think this will do the trick nicely.

2-1 from the 24: Run by Nick for 17 yards - stopped by Adam. Nick sent everybody long and then ran for the 1st down. Play was called dead after 17 yards for a stiff-arm to the middle of Adam's forearm.

2-9 from the 34: Pass by Nick to Zieser - incomplete. Brandon tipped the ball to cause the incompletion.

The hallmark of the play may have been Adam coming across the field to try to make the stop and running over Kyler (his own teamate who was on the defensive line) to try to make a play.

Yellow made the case that their Defense should get the MPV this week. It was a good performance but I need to see the stats first.

Week 17 Preview: Well the holidays are over and we're getting good turn out again. So I'd ask everyone to hold off on inviting additional players for a couple weeks until we see where we end up in terms of attendance. I think most people would rather not have games of more than 18 because people spend more than half their time on the offensive line. People who have been playing with us are welcome to keep coming out and its likely that we'll want to get a few new players later this year if we lose some folks due to conflicts, moving away, or (hopefully not) injuries. So keep people in mind.

However, if we could find some more good, dependable quarterbacks, we could run 2 games of 6 on 6 for 90 minutes and then switch the opponents with the winning teams playing each other for the next 90 minutes (and the other two teams playing each other too). I think a mini-tournament would be cool but we need QBs to make it work.

Week 15 Game Summary: Once again, close but no cigar. The voice recorder died about 40 minutes before the end of the game. At the time I thought it was the battery. When I got home, I discovered that it was broken. Fortunately, I was able to take it apart, clean it up and get it working again. So we didn't lose this week's info (other than the last 40 minutes I couldn't record while it was broken). Onto the game:

Extra player was on Red because Adam went into the game with a pulled hamstring that limited him to offensive line and line backer early and so the plan was to sub out a lot. Casey was playing with a pulled groin and quad and played a lot of line for yellow.

This generated some controversy during the game so I went and got the rules on Safeties. A safety is "scored for the opposing team when the ball is dead on or behind a team’s own goal line if the impetus came from a player on that team." There are a few exceptions:

1) Player intercepts a pass with both feet inbounds in the field of play and his momentum carries him into his own end zone. Ball is put in play at spot of interception.

2) Player intercepts a pass in his own end zone and is downed in the end zone, even after recovering in the end zone. Impetus came from passing team, not from defense. (Touchback)

In this case, the interception was in the endzone by Erik. He then continued running away from Red players and looking back up the field. He then ran out the back of the endzone. It was not his momentum which carried him out of the endzone because he was running more or less parallel to the back of the endzone when he intercepted the ball. It was only as he began looking up field that he rounded his route enough to step out of the back. The only part of the call that I'm not happy with is the fact that we don't have lines at the back of the endzone and its hard for a player to know where the boundaries are. There have been many times where a player was running down the sideline and had plenty of room to run yet was called out because someone from a better vantage point could see that his foot stepped on the missing line. Had we had a line on those occasions (or this one) its not clear that a player would have stepped out.

We may want to discuss some kind of good faith ruling on these cases in the future.

MVP: Based on a review of the stats, I think the honor this week goes to Erik. He and Zieser had the best games. Their QB stats were similar though Erik had a better completion rate and they both stopped 7 plays on defense. However, Zieser's seven stops were flags and 4 of Erik's stops were interceptions.

Week 16 Preview: Alright, we're past the holidays so I'm expecting a pretty big turn out. Please arrive on time because I'd be surprised if we had less than 9 on 9 and we'll need to get going fast if everyone is going to get a good chance to have some plays.

Week 14 Game Summary - The good news is that I think I was much more able to record details of plays. The bad news is that I did such a good job recording the details that I used up all the memory with about 6 possessions left to play. I changed the settings on the device so that I could get up to 90 minutes of recording which should be enough if I'm feeling particularly verbose in the future. I still need to do a better job recording the flags.

So on to the game: It was a cool and overcast morning. Temperatures in the upper 40s and lower 50s with a pretty steady wind from North to South for most of the game. We had 13 players including two first timers: Casey and Jared.

Zeiser switches to Red so that Red players can start subbing out since all Yellow players had subbed at least once. Kind a fair thing to do if it doesn't unbalance the teams.

Frustrating because Red did go on to score once more. I think we had 2 more possessions per side when I ran out of space on the recorder.

MVP was close with both Erik and Paul having massive games but I think Paul pulled it out for his outstanding play on Yellow and then his TD while on Red. He was valuable to both teams! : )

Week 15 Preview: Well UT is playing in that afternoon in the Insignificant Bowl in San Antonio. So I'm expecting our game to the more exciting of the two.

2-8: Thrown WAY up the field to Josh Ball traveled from about the 12 to the opposite 10 in the air. Leo picks it from the safety position and then has a nice 25 yard run back. Cain is showing some serious arm today. This was 53 in the air and probably only his second longest throw.

1-15: Odd screen to Louis, I think. Louis alone on the Right and 3 lineman were to be his screen. Unfortunately, the defender (Chris, I think) played him tight on the line so there was no room for the linemen to make space for Louis. 2 yard loss
2-17: Nice 10 yard out route to a wide open Matt but he caught the ball out of bounds.
3-17: Hard rush by 4 guys. Leo ran right and threw back across his body - normally a very dangerous thrown but he put it out where only Matt could make a play on it incomplete. Might have been a first down.

1-20: Option play Cain to Chenault. Jason ran through Adam at about a 7 yard gain and then chugs way down the field for 53 yards. Adam finally gets a flag after chasing him down and fighting through a block by Ty way down the field.

4th Yellow Drive from the 10
1-15: 15 Yard out to Adam dropped coming out of the sun. Would have been a completion plus yards from position of players (being behind defense on that side with room to turn up field).

3-11: Great play by Chris to get into a throw to Mark that would have been a 1st down on an out.

1-15: 10 yard out route that Chris broke up (his third pass defensed by my commentary at this point)
2-15: 10 Yard Post crossing under the Safety from Left to Right. Thrown a bit low but catchable and dropped by Adam. Would have been a first plus many yards given the position of the safety and the defender.
3-15: 3 Yard running play couldn't hear who ran it on my recorder (wind)

1-21: 7 Yard cross to Josh does a very nice job one handing it. Flag by Adam

1-Goal from the 13: Cain run on delayed QB draw. 2 yard gain stop by Adam.

3-Goal from the 10: Roll right throw to endzone into triple coverage (well there were three yellow players there) Adam knocked it down but might should have had a pick. If not knocked down, Louis thought he would have had it for another pick.

1-22: 5 yard cross could touched by about 4 people. Could have been picked or caught. Final player with a chance to get it was Rich on yellow, I believe.

3-9: Completion for 10 yard gain on an out pattern to Eric

1-24: Out and up to Rich over thrown.
2-24: Cuba Libra to Matt at 10 yards way overthrown. Ladder was to be Mark. Would have been a nice play.

1-Goal at the 1: WR screen to Rich on the right (with Mark coming out to block from the line) or a trips play to Louis on the left but good pressure and Brian threw it away after rolling left and not seeing anything he liked.

1-10: Scramble by Cain throwing 35 Yards in the air to Chris. Louis coming flying over to flash his hands in front of Chris breaking his view of the ball and causing an incompletion.
2-10: Scramble right throwing 50 yards in the air. Diving full out horizontal is Kyler who can't reach it.
3-10: Cain rolls right and throws right at the line of scrimmage 40 Yards in the air but incomplete
4-10: Complete but stopped short of the first down by Leo, I think. Missed who caught the ball but I think it was Chris.

8th Yellow Drive from the 23
1-Goal from the 23: Brian runs a straight option play with Leo from the backfield. Fakes the pitch spins making 2 guys miss but only gains 2 yards.
2-Goal from the 21: Mark in motion from left to right on set takes the pitch and pulls up throwing to Leo down the field (while I think Ty was starting to get the flag). Kyler nearly makes a pick but drops the ball while trying to secure a catch (Ball hit hands above his head and he didn't get control or make a football move).
3-Goal from from the 21: Leo in motion from left to right on set, fake pitch. Throw Left to Barry 17-18 but out of bounds and incomplete.
4-Goal from the 21: Good protection. Ball thrown right on deep crossing route to Joe but overthrown for a turnover on downs.

9th Red Drive from the 21
1-4: Scrambling Cain tries to run left but ends up slipping while trying to Juke Adam and rolls forward for a two yard gain. Gets ups saying something like "I hate you" but smiling : )
2-2: Cain rolls to his right and Mark gets a 13 yard sack.
3-15: Bootleg left roll back and throw right deep to Josh who was pretty well covered. Would have been a first down.

1-15: Slant crossing slot receivers. Ball completed to Chris for a 10 yard gain.
2-5: Chris runs a 5 yard cross. On the broken play comes back across getting the pass at about 7-8 yards and then bulls his way through Adam for another 7-8 yards where Leo gets the stop nonchalantly. 15 yard gain good for the 1st down.

1-15 from the 35: Quick WR cross to Chenault underneath would have been a 5 yard gain but Adam playing from LB stepped into it knocking it down.
2-15: Deep long throw after a broken play. 40 Yards in the air with Chris working hard to get to it but not able to bring it in.
3-15: Called hook-n-ladder from Chenault back to Cain but Matt played it perfectly and was in the pitch lane. Chenault turns up field for a 2 yard gain with Rich on the stop.

1-15: 8 Yard cross route to Joe a little low and out. Joe laid out for it and got hands on it but couldn't make the catch (which is understandable since he was chewing grass from his drive).
2-15: Good pressure and Leo throws it away from in the endzone.

This was a tough day to pick an MVP. We had a lot of outstanding performances. While lots of players had at least one very nice play (like Rich's catch), I was looking for players who had several big plays or were just in everything. While I thought I had a nice game with a pick , a knockdown to prevent a score, 9 flag pulls (6 or 7 on QB runs), and a 40ish yard run, but there was one easy drop that would have been for at least 20 yards and a first down and possibly a 65 yard touchdown. Also, I noticed that I did a better job noting when I got flags than when other people did (Next week I want to know who got every flag - tell me after the play) and didn't think it fair to give credit when the recording was biased that way. Finally, unless a performance is so dominating that it can't be denied, I tend to think the MVP should be on the winning team. Even if there wasn't bias in the recording, I doubt I would have been a contender (because of that ridiculous drop).

Three Red performance stood out to me as being outstanding: Chris, Ty, & Chenault. Chris had a couple nice catches including one with very good yards after catch and contact. The real key in my mind was that he played some great defense. He was in a ton of plays and knocked down or helped break up a bunch of them. Ty had two big catches for 92 yards and a TD (even though there were 2 other plays for losses totaling 7 yards) and had a pick on the play after Adam's big run had Yellow threatening to tie it up. Then there's Chenault. In addition to his big run (longest from scrimmage in the game), he had a sack that prevented Brian from scoring on a QB run that would have gotten Yellow's first score pretty early. He also had a couple of other other nice plays.

As you can imagine was a tough call and I honestly couldn't pick a single winner, especially since my recording still isn't good enough yet.

Week 14 Preview: Playing Xmas weekend. Dare I hope for an early present and have at least a small game to play?

Week 12 Summary - As an experiment I brought a voice recorder to the game and tried to record each play. I missed some but it was pretty good. So here it goes:

4-1: Scramble Cain threatening to run but flips it over the defenders while approaching the line of scrimmage. Ball caught by Patrick but he is stopped just shy of the first down. His center of mass (flag belt) was just short. I think Mark made the stop.

1-25: 5 Yard run by Barry
2-20: Missed recording the play but it went 10 yards
3-10: 10 Yard catch and 10 Yards after the catch resulting in a first down. Marcus had this one I think

1-15: Broken Play supposed to be QB Run but he pulled up and threw an ugly pass that the receiver (Barry or Mark, I think) had to knock down to prevent interception.

2-2: Big completion to Adam for 15 but there was a question of whether it was caught in bounds. There was no disagreement on the spot but if you looked down the line in one direction it looked in bounds. If you looked down the line in the other direction, it looked out of bounds. Play was ruled a redo.
2-2: Play breaks down and Leo runs it 20 yards for a first down.

About this point, I lost continuity in my recordings. I'm not quite sure what happened but basically there were only about 2 more drives per team with Brian taking over as Red's QB. Yellow scored twice more (once by Louis and I didn't get the info on the final TD) and the game ended on a interception by Barry. Final score is Yellow over Red 5-1.

MVP - It kind of depends. Right now, I have Louis as MVP for 2 TDs and a pick. However, Barry had a pick, and a bunch of passes defensed. I know he also had one 1 TD. If he scored a second one (Remember, I don't know who had Yellow's 5th TD. If Barry had that second TD then I think Barry wins the MVP.

Week 13 Preview - Man I hope we have a game something like last week. I know the score was little lopsided but the game was closer than the score. As you can see by the big plays Red had, there were many times that they would very unfavorable down and distance and they'd pull a big play for 20+ yards. It was also great to get 3 new players out. Mike, Marcus, and Rich were all welcome players. I'm going to try to record the game again and do a better job identifying the players (especially on the other team - I think Mike probably got shorted some credit because I didn't get everything recorded). Not sure about transcription through. It took about 90 minutes to pull it together.

Week 11 Summary: Hmmmm. Lets see what I wrote in the preview last week:

"Well we had 7 on 7 on a holiday weekend so lets hope that bodes well for the next several weeks. I know that people have familial obligations and need to spend money to keep retailers in business but remember, stores are open in the afternoon and absence makes the heart grow fonder."

Now I turn back to Saturday morning, the day we were supposed to play our Week 11 game (note that I said "supposed to play"). Let me set it up. Its Saturday morning at 8:30. The temperature is about 50 degrees and partly cloudy. The air is dry and wind is minimal. In short, it is perfect for football.

I sit in my car. Next to me Brian is in his and Matt is in some SUV he stole. No one else is there. None of our maybes show up. We finally decide that we might as well throw the ball around a bit. Hope swells within me. Chenault has shown up. I walk up to his truck and take a step back to protect my cleats as he explains that he's been throwing up bourbon. With the lack of players there, he backs up and leaves. I go back out to the field to run around a bit.

A few minutes later Jimmy shows up. We're up to 4. I entertain thoughts of playing a little three on three scrimage after all, Brecht is one of our maybes and he never shows up close to on time. Those hopes are dashed as Jimmy paces for a few minutes and then leaves.

Shortly after that, Shay shows up and we're back up to 4. I curse Jimmy for leaving when we could have played 2 on 2 with an all time QB and work on some route running. 15 minutes later, we all give up and leave. So we go from 7 on 7 during a holiday weekend where many regulars were unavailable due to travel and injury to none. So sad. No Week 11 MVP.

Week 12 Preview: Dare I hope for an actual game this week? I'm in withdrawals already.
