Wind played havok with the ball today with both QB's having completions in the mid-30s. There was also a lot of pressure with each beign sacked 5 times and experiencing numerous QB pressures. Blitzing nearly very down makes it much harder for QBs.

MVP - this week, I'm giving it to Treadaway. Every week, he seems to do nothing to show up and make plays. Not the fastest player (by far), not the strongest (again, by far) but this game shows his value. Throw him the ball he catches it and gets yards. Give him a chance to score and he gets 2 TDs (including the game winner). Let him play safety and he gets picks and defensed passes. I noticed a number of times when he also mades a really good stops like after a pick. Sure a stiff-arm to the throat will put him on the ground but no one's perfect. Nice game Treadaway.

Offensive Player of the Week - This goes to Brandon with 6 catches on 9 targets where 5 were for 1st downs (of the other 3 targets, one was a bad throw due to pressure and one was picked).

Defensive Player of the Week - Adam - Adam did a little bit of everything and had a role in 10 of 36 pass attempts being incomplete.

Observation of the Week - There was a lot more fighting for the ball. We had 2 balls ripped free at the point of the catch and others where players were fighting through simultaneous possession to get the ball. Very nice.

8 flags, a safety, 1.5 pressures, a defensed pass, and a pick 6 that was called back to be just a pick due to a questionable flag guard call didn't even make defensive honorable mention? I need to step up my game.

Actually I should have highlighted it. The award was between you and me this week. On your safety, I told Chenault I needed to go get you but he said no so I didn't. As to that pick-six, I can sympathize - I had 2 TDs lost due to questionable calls.

Mark Neubauer said...

the flag guarding was not questionable, it was called immediately (well before the TD was scored) after you hit my wrist as I was reaching for the flag. It was not called after the play was completed. And to be fair, recall Erik you called a flag guard on Matta that prevented a TD as well that was just as questionable as the one I called.

Observation after playing again after a 3 1/2 year break... but I think things have become too slanted in favor of pass rush. Defensive MVP has been a lineman just about every week when it probably should be a little more distributed. As good as Chenault & Adam are on defense, I don't necessarily think they're the best defensive players on the field > 50% of the time.

I don't think we should make major changes but I think the balance has swung too much in the direction of line play/pass rush... we need a tweak or two that doesn't dramatically affect the game, but might make a balls-out pass rush slightly less critical.

Good points Chris. I'd mention 2 things:

1) I think that one of the arguments behind QBs being able to run once per set of downs in medium games (they could already run on every down in the 9 on 9 game) was that it prevented ends and linemen from doing a balls-out rush. The threat of the QB run requires rushers to play smarter. They have to keep to their lanes to both pressure and contain the QB or he'll gouge them for big gains. It requires more communication between the rushers. It also requires more planning and communication among the offensive linemen.

2) Erik was my other lead candidate for the Defensive Player of the Week award. I looked back at the 18 games this year. 11 of the Def Player of the Week awards were given to players who were primarily "rushers" and 7 were given to players who were primarily "secondary".

So you're right that the winners have leaned more toward rushing than coverage but it is also worth noting that many of the rushers are less likely to win the Offensive Player of the Week awards. In the 18 games we've had, I think Canadian, Jesse, and I are only ones who have won both an Offensive Award and Defensive Award in at least one week of the year. In fact, the reason I created the 2 new awards this year was because MVP each week had tended to be won every week by Canadian, Jesse, or Street last year so I wanted to have awards that offered more players an opportunity to win.

Having said all that I will continue to look closely at this. If I wasn't both playing and recording the games (and thus able to see everything, I'd record whether person who got the flag was the guy assigned to that receiver. If not, I wouldn't give points for it - your first job as a receiver is to prevent the catch. If you came in to make the flag on another player's assignment, then that would be worth points.

Chris Treadaway said...

I think you do a great job of recording everything... it's a brutal job to do it during the game, much less generate stats.

Agreed on the imperfections... you can't tell who the lockdown corner is (or isn't). You can't tell who is getting picked on in the secondary (or isn't). Stats on d-linemen are a lot easier to collect, so it's easier to tell who is disrupting things in the backfield. It isn't so easy for the secondary.

Another such issue is offensive line play... who is whiffing their blocks and who is being effective on the o-line. Who gets beat on sacks, etc.

You could go crazy analyzing all of it... and at some point you have to accept that you can't collect as much data as you'd like. I just think that, to Erik's point, either the rules or the imperfect data tends to slant recognition in favor of defensive linemen maybe too much.

Mark Neubauer said...

I actually think the exact opposite, I think the running QB has made the pass rush not as effective as it was previously. Last year, in an 8 man game, we would have 2 people rush and 6 in coverage with the occasional blitz. It seems like this year we have started blitzing somebody on almost every down because there is too much risk with letting the QB hang out in the pocket too long. If the QB has too much time, the secondary gets spread out, and the QB run is too effective. To negate this, it seems like we started sending more heat to force QB's to get the ball away faster, making the passes shorted.

I disagree also about the ability for linemen to get D stats more now. Running the ball is almost non existent. This being the case, 90% of the time a D linemen gets a tackle it is on a sack. However, D line really have almost no chance at tackling receivers. Occasionally there are screen passes etc. that we can get in on, however secondary players get normal pass tackles, running QB tackles, interception opportunities, occasional pass rush opportunities. As far as I know only 1 time this year has a person who lined up in the box gotten an interception. In that case I batted a ball and Ethan caught the deflection. Overall however, D Line is more of a pride position, not necessarily a stat position.

In the most recent game there were 109 passes thrown, out of 109 there were 10 sacks, and there were 7 interceptions. I don't think that 10% of plays having a sack is too disproportionate.

The problem is that the o line changes and tehre are people on the line who never really should have been an O lineman, however the D line are primarily guys who excel at that position, creating a mismatch. Of course the opposite is also true.

When I line up against Jesse (no disrespect jesse) on the line, I have an advantage, however when i am a receiver and he is covering me he has the advantage. It all works out in the end

Adam Leonard said...

I do think the QB running threat makes the rusher play smarter. When I first was rushing (last year) I could go balls out straight at the QB from the DE or blitz position. If he got to the outside of me because I headed straight in, I didn't have to worry much b/c the QB couldn't go far. Now, I have to play smarter. I have to both get to the QB and make sure I contain him so he doesn't take off for 16 yards.

As a receiver, I don't like QBs running because it reduces the number of opportunities to get the ball - usually by 15 to 25 plays a game. As a receiver, my thinking is that the QB gets a piece of nearly every play anyway so there's no need to hog it, right?

When I look at this game, I try to think about what makes it more like the NFL game (minus the pads). So QBs running are a tough one for me. On the one hand, it makes rushers have to play smarter, better, and worry about both the pass and the run. On the other, it means that there is less penalty for wiffing as an offensive lineman because the QB can often run.

Sending 3 because the QB can run doesn't bother me. Sending 4 every play is very effective because the QB doesn't get a chance to get the ball off. Having said that, if I'm a QB, I'm going to work on my loop passes - look to see which manned up play breaks the press and lob it up out in front. If the QB can hit a few of those, the 4 man blitzes will probably stop.
