Week 2 Game Summary CORRECTED:

So much for the hurricane and my handwringing. After Ike made a hard right after hitting the coast, we ended up with no rain and the wind was not even the worst we've played in. Certainly some balls sailed a bit but we've had games where you had to aim the ball 2-3 times the normal distance you'd lead a receiver because the cross wind would take it move it as far laterally as you threw it longitudinally.

We had another large game where we played 9 on 9 with substitutions - great turnout. Game started 7 on 7 for 1 series each because we only had 15 timely players and its only fair to play an even number of series at a given size game because 7 on 7 is very different than 9 on 9.

Our defensive leaders were Canadian with 2 picks and 2 defensed passes, Ray with 2 picks, and Barry with 3 defensed passes. As a unit, however, Red's defensive front 4 were stellar scoring 5 sacks/stops for losses and 5 QB pressures. Couple that with 3 picks (Paul also had 1) and 4 defensed passes and you have a very strong performance. Yellow's defense also put up numbers with 3 sacks/stops for losses, 4 QB Pressures, 2 picks and 8 defensed passes.

Special Teams Stats:
Players Punts Punt Yards Punts Fielded
Leo 1 24 0
Mark 1 47 0
Paul 0 0 2
Rick 1 30 0
Nick 3 83 0

Punting is becoming a more interesting part of the game. We had 6 in this game (3 by each team) for a total of 184 yards (averaging just under 31 yards per punt).

MVP: This is ultra hard this week. Big games usually are harder because there are more players per square yard of field which typically leads to fewer opportunities for a player to stand out - particularly when a QB can run and there are 4 receivers and 4 lineman. I often struggle to select the award winner but much more in these large games. Ultimately, I may have to start doing offensive and defensive players of the game and then an MVP. For MVP, I typically try to pick a player who had a big impact on both offense and defense. Sometimes, I give it to a player with an unballanced performance if it is dominating and a difference-maker in the game. I'm going to hold off on the award this week in order to seek comments in the Blog about the process and see if they will help me this week.

Here is one of the problems I have that I'd like feedback on - how to weigh offensive/defensive coordinator contributions fairly. I have no doubt that Chenaut's play calling has made a difference in week 1 and week 2. Indeed, I try to play on his team because he makes me a better player (anyone remember me rushing the QB before late last spring?). At the same time, I only know about his contributions because I was on his team and see them first hand. How do I credit that kind of valuable input on the other team when I can't see it?

The other player I'm considering for the award this week, is Mark who had a nice game on both offense and defense. However, I hesitate a bit here. Mark had one monster drive where he got almost every ball and made great plays. However, I know the impact he has on defense because, I personally often benefit from hit. He's a much more feared rusher than I am for good reason (fast and much stronger) and so people have to dedicate more resources to him. Having said that, it's hard for me to observe his impact sometimes if I'm not rushing with him. How often am I missing a similar impact by another player on the other team?

I take this seriously and would appreciate your comments and help.

Week 2 Game Update:

Game at Round Rock practice fields on Deep Woods Drive off 620.

Game to be played on Saturday the 13th at 8:30. Do not make me get up at 6:00 to get to the field by 7:30 and get everything set up to just stand in the rain waiting to see if we get at least 12 people. We have 16 yes and 5 maybes. We better have a game.

Thursday, September 11, 2008

Week 2 Options:

Okay, I’ve been looking at the forecast even though it’s a day earlier than I normally do but the storm could really impact us.

Right now, the storm is expected run to the East of us but it will be raining – Weather.com is forecasting “squalls” from 9-11 on Saturday with winds around 25mph. I’ve never seen it forecast squalls so that’s something new.

We have three options:

1) Play on Saturday despite the fact that it will likely be raining the entire time and throwing the ball more than 10 yards against the wind will be nigh impossible.
2) Cancel the game this week.
3) Play the game Sunday morning.

I generally don’t support moving the game around but this week might be a good week to do so. Sunday has chance of isolated thunderstorms with winds around 14 mph. That’s a lot more what we usually play in when it’s ugly out.

We don’t need a decision Thursday night be we need one on Friday and we need the parameters around which we’re going to make the final decision (if the forecast changes because the storm shifts more towards Louisiana, for example we could play Saturday as normal).

One thing I’d like to suggest is that if we play on Saturday and it’s expected to rain and be really nasty, we play at Round Rock. They have more fields so if we screw one up, it won’t be as big a problem. This weekend’s game is unlikely to be really great anyway so why would we want to jeopardize our arrangement with McNeil? Same thing if we move the game to Sunday – we should play at Round Rock.

The only way we should play at McNeil this week is if the storm ends up missing us.
Week 1 Game Summary CORRECTED AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN:

Despite problems with 183 delaying a third of our players, we had a fairly timely start which I appreciate since it was considerably cooler before 9:00 than afterwards. Only 3 players were considered late.

As one would expect from the first game of the season, the game had a little bit of ugly play but because most of our QBs came out and practiced several times this summer, QB accuracy was not a big issue.

Game started 8 on 8 and then jumped to 9 on 9 after two series each way. The new punting rules were big a success. The QB run option for 8 on 8 only received limited testing since the game only lasted a few series before jumping to 9 on 9. We'll have to see what happens with it. Burleson managed to rip off a big run but in my opinion, that was partially because the defense did not have a player really spying him.

Yellow - Barry, Biscuits, Burleson, Cain, Jesse, Josh, Matta, Mike, and Seth
Red - Adam, Canadian, Casey, Chenault, Kuzi, Mark, Nick, Ray, Rick, and Street

Game starts 8 on 8 for 2 series each but then jumps to 9 on 9 with subs.

1-Goal from the 12: Pass by Street to Mark - 5 yard gain - stopped by Seth.

1-13 from the 7: Pass by Cain to Josh - defensed by Casey. Casey got the ball while rushing the QB.

2-6 from the 34: Run by Street for 12 yards - stopped by Mike. Key block by Mark.
1-14 from the 34: Pass by Street to Ray - 23 yard gain - stopped by Jesse. Play of the game. Street throws under pressure to Ray on a GO pattern with Jesse in very tight coverage. Ball is a little underthrown and Ray basically slows up and jumps behind and over Jesse to make the catch. Thing of beauty.
1-Goal from the 11: Pass by Rick to Adam - defensed by Jesse. Half-back option play and the ball was thrown blind (or just very short) into basically triple coverage. Adam was in the back corner of the endzone and open if the ball had made it further.

3-Goal from the 16: Pass by Street to Ray - defensed by Jesse.

3-1 from the 39: Cain - sacked by Mark. Loss of 5 yards.
4-6 from the 34: Pass by Cain to Matta - defensed by Adam. Adam got Cain's arm as he was throwing the ball.

3-15 from the 5: Run by Cain for 14 yards - stopped by Ray.
4-1 from the 19: Pass by Cain to Jesse - dropped. Good coverage by Kuzi.

Red Drive #8
1-Goal from the 19: Run by Nick for 15 yards - stopped by Cain. QB Draw.
2-Goal from the 4: Pass by Nick to Ray - intercepted by Cain - stopped by Mark and Street. Cain got it from the safety spot. Consensus after discussion amongst the other three receivers and several defenders was that Ray was the only receiver who was well covered.

Yellow Drive #9
1-10 from the 10: Pass by Cain to Matta - defensed by Kuzi. Probably should have been picked.
2-10 from the 10: Run by Cain for 10 yards - stopped by Street.
1-20 from the 20: Cain throws the ball away. QB pressure by Mark.
2-20 from the 20: Pass by Cain to Josh - 7 yard gain - stopped by Ray and Street.
3-13 from the 27: Pass by Cain to Matta - incomplete. Ball a bit low.
4-13 from the 27: Punt by Cain for 26 yards received by Street.

Red Drive #9
1-13 from the 27: Pass by Street to Ray - incomplete.
2-13 from the 27: Pass by Street to Nick - incomplete. Amazing throw on a Go route.
3-13 from the 27: Street - sacked by Matta. Loss of 11 yards.
4-4 from the 16: Punt by Mark for 40 yards.

Yellow Drive #10
1-16 from the 24: Pass by Cain to Jesse - defensed by Kuzi.
2-16 from the 24: Pass by Cain to Matta - 17 yard gain - stopped by Kuzi.
1-19 from the 39: Pass by Cain to Jesse - defensed by Kuzi.
2-19 from the 39: Pass by Cain to Jesse - defensed by Street.
3-19 from the 39: Cain - sacked by Adam. Loss of 3 yards. Flag guard by Cain.
4-21 from the 38: Pass by Cain to Burleson - incomplete. QB pressure by Adam. That's game. 2 - 1, Red.

Nobody had a huge day in terms of yards though Nick had a high completion percentage. The teams were actually fairly even with 1 TD and 2 picks each and 147 vs 159 yards.

Our defensive leaders this week were Kuzi with 5 flags, 4 defensed passes and a pick-six and Adam with 4 flags, a pick, a defensed pass, 3 sacks/stops for losses and 1 QB pressure (though Adam was the beneficiary of being the 4th man in a 3 man rush consisting of Casey, Mark, and Chenault - it's hard for a 4 man line to stop those three which allowed Adam to aim for where the QB was rolling to). Jesse also had a strong day with 5 flags and 5 defensed passes.

Special Teams:
Players Punts Punt Yards Punts Fielded
Canadian 0 0 1
Kuzi 0 0 0
Mark 2 59 0
Street 0 0 1
Cain 3 87 0

We had a total to 5 punts for 146 yards averaging just under 30 yards per. Interestingly, both punter's numbers were very similar.

MVP: Okay this was pretty tough. Going solely based on "fantasy points" I'd say it was Street but the key to this win was defense. Street had a pretty nice defensive game but Kuzi had a much bigger game in addition he lined up on Jesse - last year's season MVP - and pretty much shut him out Jesse's one catch came when another player was covering him. I will say this: Kuzi's drop in the endzone did hurt his case but in a game with a number of outstanding performances (at least for a 9 on 9 season kickoff game), Kuzi's is deserving of the award.

When I developed this blog, my intent was to have people participating by adding their comments. All you need to do is register and you should be able to add your wit (or what passes for wit) and wisdom (or what you THINK passes for wisdom) to the blog.
McNeil Gift

As many of you know, we have been treated VERY well by the folks at McNeil. Unlike most schools in town that try to keep people off their fields (particularly a bunch of older guys who play a very physical game that can really tear up the turf), the coaches at McNeil have been very hospitable towards us. Not only do they let us play there but when the rent the fields out to organizations, they tell those organizations about us and try to get them to accommodate our game. This relationship is very valuable and so at the end of last year, we thought we should do something to let them know how much we appreciate them and the arrangement.

*Rick* has a sports art business and does great work so we had him put together a beautiful framed print in the McNeil colors that has an arm grabbing a helmet in a "rally cry" posture:

In any case, a few months ago, I went down to the school to deliver the gift. It was during summer football and when I went out to the field in a tie and slacks, some of the players thought I might be a college scout which was obviously amusing. In any case, after about 30 minutes of walking around the school (it's REALLY big), I finally found the Athletic Director/Head Coach and gave him the piece and thanked him for all his support of us. He was really thrilled with it, exclaiming 3 or 4 times "That's totally awesome!" and best of all, telling us that "we're great and we take care of the fields." I'm really glad we did it and think we should do something similar next year.
14th Season Kickoff

Well the season was scheduled to begin at the end of September but due to popular demand (due to compliance with the conditions I set out), the season opener has been moved up 3 weeks to this Saturday the 6th.

Normally we start in late September because of the heat and it was the heat that made me most hesitant to move up our season kickoff. About a month ago, I was convinced to do so based on agreement by players to 2 conditions. First, that we start our games at 8:30 and play until about 11:00 for the first few weeks while highs are still going to be in the 90s. Second, that we hold practices every week until the season began. I'm happy to say that although we didn't have widespread participation in practice, we did get enough people each week to run routes and practice coverage. I know that I benefited greatly from it and appreciate everyone who participated. I still hate the heat but perhaps I'll be able to play more than 20 minutes before sucking wind.

We generally have large attendance early in the season so please do not add or bring others to the game who are not on the initial invite. If you think I forgot to put down a regular (which is certainly possible, particularly since I don't have email for Ray's brothers who came out pretty regularly last year), please send me email or call so I can look at it.

GAME LOCATION - at McNeil. TIME - 8:30 to 11:00. "On time" means cleats on and ready to play. We're starting the season early by popular demand to now's the time to back that up.

Season 13 Awards

Been a while since I posted anything since hte season is over but I needed to get back and put up end of season stats and award info. Let's start with some individual best games.

Most 1st Downs - Leo on 1/5/08 with 9 first downs on his 10 catches and 1 rush.
Most Receptions - Canadian on 2/23/08 with 15 catches on 17 targets for 93 yards, 1 TD and 4 First Downs.
Most Flags- Street on 2/23/08 with 15 flags - he was largely covering Canadian and using his patented "give up 5-6 yards" coverage method.
Most Defensed Passes - Adam on 4/19/08 with 8 defensed flags.
Most INTs - Barry on 11/17/07 with 5 INTs.
Most Sacks - Donnie with 3 for -32 yards; Matta with 3 for -23 yards; Chenault with 3 for -21 yards.

Best day by a QB - Nick on 5/17/08 who went 28 of 41 (68.29%) for 561 yards and 8 TDs with no INTs and only one sack. This was worth 50 fantasy points.
Best Defensive Game - Street on 3/8/08 who had 9 flags, 1 pass defensed, and 3 picks of which, 2 were returned for TDs. This was worth 21 points.
Best Individual Game - Jesse on 5/10/08 had 5 catches of 6 passes for 290 Yards receiving and 4 Receiving TDs and a 1st down and 25 Yards rushing (a pitch by Adam down field) for 1 Rushing TD. On defense he had a defensed pass and 2 picks, one of which was a Pick-Six. This was worth 73 fantasy points.

We now get to season awards. The awards are broken out into 3 categories based on attendance level. "Die Hards" attended at least 18 games (half of the games we played). The "Regulars" attended 12-17 games. The "Fairweather" players attended at least 3 but less than 12. This may seem like a silly category but we had a few players who only attended a few times due to other committments but had amazing games in those few they attended. Using these criteria, we had 11 Die Hards, 10 Regulars, and 17 Fairweather players. We also had 54 other players who came out once or twice. So in total, we had 92 different people come out and play this year. On to the Awards:

Mr. Sure Hands Awards go to the players with the highest reception rate (catches per target):
Die Hards - Chris with 63.11%
Regulars - Kuzi with 57.14%
Fairweather - Cueva with 65.63% in three games

Chris Carter Awards are named after the man who only caught TDs (TDs per catch):
Die Hards -Jesse 31.00%
Regulars - Curtis 30.00%
Fairweather - Hoppe 33.00%, Jeremy 33.00%, and Paul 33.00%

Randy Moss Awards are given to the big play receivers (Yds per catch):
Die Hards - Jesse 18.15
Regulars - David 19.5
Fairweather - Paul 23.24

QBs of the Year are named are based on passing TDs and passing Yards:
Die Hards - Nick
Regulars - Cain
Fairweather - Jeremy

Offensive Players of the Year:
Die Hards - Nick had more passing yards and more passing TDs and fewer picks than all other QBs put together
Regulars - Jimmy led in average catches, yards, and TDs per game
FairWeather - Paul - This may be a bit of a bit of a judgement call by me because Cueva had slightly more catches and yards per game but Paul was MVP in 2 of his 3 games, that's amazing.

Michael Strahan Awards are given for sacks per game:
Die Hards - Chenault with 0.56
Regulars - Matta with 0.86
Fairweather - Donnie with 1.75

Deion Sanders Awards are given to players with the most INTs/Defensed Passes per game:
Die Hards - Canadian & Street who had 2.10 Ints/Def Passes per game
Regulars - Barry with 1.6 Ints/Def Passes per game
Fairweather - Paul with 2 Ints/Def Passes per game

Roy Williams Awards are given to the players with the most average flags per game:
Die Hards - Street with 5.35
Regulars - Cain with 3.42
Fairweather - Ray with 4.38

Defensive Players of the Year:
Die Hards - Street who had an average of .9 picks and 1.2 passes defensed per game and 5 Defensive TDs in 20 games
Regulars - Barry who had more defensive fantasy points than anyone else in his cohort both in total and per game averages
Fairweather - Paul who was 2nd highest flags, plus the aforementioned picks/def passes per game

Winningest Players (percent of games won):
Die Hards - Chris with 67%
Regulars - Barry with 67%
Fairweather - Donnie and Ray at 75%

Season MVP
Jesse who tied Street with 6 individual game MVP honors but who won 61% of his games - second most amongst the diehard group.

That's it for this year's awards. Tracking stats makes them possible and I'm looking forward to more next year.
